OneDrive for Android supports 8K videos

Microsoft this week updated its OneDrive app for Android, which includes a new home screen that supports a Samsung feature called Motion Photos and the ability to play 8K videos.

The new home screen provides quick access to the latest files and offline files, plus the Today function in OneDrive, which lets you think of old photos.

This update also includes support for the Samsung Motion Photos feature, which allows Samsung mobile users to play back photos captured with this feature in the OneDrive app or online.

These images work just like Apple's real-time photos, capturing frozen frames and a few seconds of video and audio before capturing them.

Microsoft said: Samsung Motion Photos will be rolling out worldwide and will require Android version or higher.

Additionally, Microsoft has supported 8K video playback on compatible Samsung phones such as the new Galaxy S21 or S20 launched last year.

While you can still store 8K videos through OneDrive, the service now supports playback on compatible screens and devices.

It can be tempting to save 8K videos with Microsoft's cloud storage service, especially if OneDrive now supports files up to 250GB.

When sharing a dynamic picture to OneDrive, the recipient can view the dynamic photo using the Android version of OneDrive or the network version of the cloud storage service.

The new OneDrive update for Android has received a lot of attention on Samsung phones and is an example of the ongoing partnership between Samsung and Microsoft.

The two companies are integrating Microsoft software and services into Samsung phones in various ways and have built a cloud gaming partnership through xCloud.

With many similar cloud storage services appearing on the market, this could be the biggest update Google Drive competitors have seen in a long time.
