Samsung plans to buy LG OLED panels

Samsung will order millions of OLED TV panels from LG Display, according to the latest reports from a number of Korean news outlets.

Officials reportedly held a recent meeting to approve the deal. One million panels will be shipped to Samsung in the second half of this year, and it will be 4 million next year.

If an agreement is reached, it will be Samsung's first purchase of OLED panels from Korean competitors and market leaders.

TVs with LG OLED panels are two of the professional reviewers' best reviews.

Samsung withdrew from the OLED TV market five years ago, and now LG Display is introducing OLED panels to several TV manufacturers including Sony, Vizio, Hisense and LG.

Last year, LG Display announced an expansion of its OLED product line, TrendForce, a research firm that will increase its production capacity in the second quarter of this year.

According to a report, the total production capacity of LG Display OLED TVs is around 8 million units this year.

The latest reports indicate that Samsung is phasing out the LCD panels currently used in its TV line, and even QLEDs are using LCD panels behind the quantum dot layer.

Last year, Samsung Display announced that it would suspend LCD panels amid fierce price competition from Chinese competitors, but it delayed the decision after the pandemic boosted demand.

Although the decline in LCD prices is believed to be the cause of the price hike last year, it has been reported that this trend has reversed this year, with higher prices for LCD screens, prompting Samsung to search for other options.

Although Samsung is considering purchasing panels from LG Display, it is believed that the display division will work with QD OLED TV panels.

Samsung Display is currently developing a TV prototype using QD OLED technology. According to reports, the sample sent to Samsung in January was rejected due to low light.

QD-OLED isn't the only new technology in Samsung's eyes, as the company recently touted micro-LED technology, which uses a series of small, self-illuminating LEDs to create images.

Although Samsung has brought this technology to the market with a number of recent TVs, it is believed that it will take some time to clarify the pricing of popular devices.

There are reports that the company is currently developing self-illuminating quantum point television.
