According to the Collectibles website Rally, an anonymous buyer paid $2 million for an older, unopened version of the Super Mario Bros. video game.

The New York Times first reported that the 1985 game's price broke the record set less than a month ago when a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 sold for $1.56 million.

Last year, the record for the most expensive video game was broken several times due to the high demand for children's collectibles.

In July, a version of Super Mario Bros. appeared. It was auctioned for $114,000. In November, a copy of Super Mario Bros. crashed. 3 This record was sold for $156,000.

Then that record was broken in April when a copy of Super Mario Bros. appeared. It was auctioned for $660,000. This followed in July when a copy of The Legend of Zelda sold for $870,000.

This 1985 game was built for the original Nintendo platform and was never unlocked, said Rob Petrozzo, co-founder of collectors' website Rally, which is a rarity in games.

As people look for ways to spend money, collectibles and many other forms of investment are in high demand during the pandemic.
