Windows 11 brings tabs to File Explorer

Microsoft has begun testing tabs in File Explorer for Windows 11.

Rafael Rivera, one of the developers of the EarTrumpet app for Windows, has discovered support for hiding new tabs while testing the latest version of Microsoft Windows 11.

When enabled, the File Explorer app displays tabs at the top, allowing users to open multiple folders in a single window.

This feature appears to be one of the secret additions that Microsoft recently tested in Windows 11.

Adding tabs to File Explorer in Windows 11 allows you to open multiple folders in a single window.

Microsoft first started testing tabs in Windows 10 apps, a feature called groups.

This includes support for tabs in File Explorer and tabs in any Windows application. But Microsoft canceled the project and did not offer it to Windows 10 users.

However, it does not appear that Microsoft has patched the File Explorer interface as part of support for this tab. File Explorer has been part of the operating system since Windows 95.

Several designers have developed concepts in recent years with the aim of improving and modernizing them.

Microsoft made some improvements to File Explorer in Windows 11. However, one of the developers has created a new file explorer app called Files. Available on the Windows Store, this app supports tabs and includes other modern themes and features.

Windows Insider Director Amanda Langofsky said last month that the company reported features for program subscribers who want to try and provide feedback.

Tabs appear in Windows 11 Preview

The new preview version of the operating system with build number 22572 contains new applications to facilitate video editing and screen time management for children.

File Explorer tabs work more or less like popular third-party file managers. It's familiar to anyone who's used tabbed browsers for the past few years.

Since tabs are an essential file explorer feature and a useful natural supplement, expect an official announcement from Microsoft soon. However, there is no guarantee that it will come with the latest version of Windows 11.

It looks like Microsoft is preparing for the next major OS release. Windows Insiders recently received two new themes that include a variety of improvements for touch users, as well as other general improvements and changes over the past few months.

The next major OS update is expected to appear in the second half of the year as version 22H2.
