Meta announces new developments regarding encrypted chats in Messenger

Meta announced today (Monday) that it will make some features available to regular users of the instant messaging app Messenger to users of encrypted chats as well.

In a blog post, the US tech giant said that features include chat styles, emojis, and custom interactions that allow for personalization and improvement of encrypted chats.

Features also include the ability to choose group chat profile images for various conversations with friends or colleagues, and link previews that allow you to see the contents of a link before clicking on it. In addition to the active status, the active status can also be used to let others know that they can chat freely.

Especially for Android users, Meta brings bubbles that allow users to read and reply to messages while using other apps. If this option is activated, a speech bubble will appear when you receive a new message.

Along with the new feature available to users of encrypted chat in Messenger, Meta has gradually begun testing to make encryption the default for all users of the instant messaging app.

"We know that people want a space to communicate, and they want to know that these conversations are private and secure," the company said in its post. "This is why we took the time to assemble a talented team of engineers, cryptographers, designers, and policy experts, all dedicated to unlocking virtual end-to-end encryption on Messenger," she adds.

Over the next few months, more and more users will gradually have some of their conversations protected by an additional layer of end-to-end encryption.

"We will notify users of these individual threads when we update. We know people will have questions about how individual threads are selected and promoted, so we want to be clear that this is a random process."

The company added, “It is designed to be random so as not to negatively impact our infrastructure and the chat experience of our users. This also ensures that the new end-to-end encrypted feed will continue to provide users with a fast, reliable and rich messaging experience.”

Meta warns that building a secure and resilient end-to-end encrypted service for the billions of messages sent through Messenger each day requires rigorous testing. He promised to provide more information on his progress on the effort in 2023.
