Google imposes new fees on developers

Google has revealed more details about additional developer fees and its plans to comply with the European Union's new Digital Markets Act.

The company announced that it plans to charge developers even if they don't use its App Store, just as Apple does with its App Store.

The new fees apply to external offering programs. This new program allows Google Play Store developers to onboard EEA users outside of their apps, including promotions.

With this fee, Google follows in the footsteps of Apple, which reduced its App Store commissions in the European Union to comply with digital markets laws, while introducing a new basic fee for technology that requires developers to pay an after-use fee to pay half a euro. The first 1 million installs, regardless of whether the download was from the App Store or a third-party site.

Google has taken a similar approach, making clear that its App Store service fees are not just a payment processing fee, but reflect the value of Android and its App Store and support its continued investment in Android and the App Store for the users and developers it can interest within the account. On which people depend.

The company announced that it will now charge the following fees for transactions within the external offering program:

  • The initial acquisition fee is 10% for in-app purchases and 5% for a two-year subscription. According to Google, this fee represents the value the App Store provides by making it easier for a first-time user to acquire through its store.
  • The ongoing service fee is 17% for in-app purchases and 7% for subscriptions. The company said the fees reflect the great value its store provides to users and developers, including services such as parental controls, security checks, fraud prevention, and continuous app updates.

If the User agrees, the Developer may terminate the current Service Subscription and associated fees after two years and the Current Service will be discontinued.

“Since users who obtain the app through the Google Play Store expect services such as parental controls, security controls, fraud prevention, and constant app updates, stopping the service requires user consent,” the company said.
