The US plans to target Chinese drone maker DJI after banning TikTok.
A New York Times report highlighted a bill introduced by the House Energy and Commerce Committee last month that could lead to a nationwide ban on DJI drones.
If the Chinese Communist Party's anti-drone law passes, DJI drones will be added to the list of devices covered by the FCC's Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019.
The list prohibits the operation of communications equipment or services that pose a national security risk on United States networks.
It also prohibits companies from using federal funds to purchase prohibited equipment. Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE are currently on the list.
Rep. Elise Stefanik introduced the CPC Anti-Drone Act of 2022 for the first time.
Stefanik told the New York Times that government authorities discovered that DJI passed information about critical US infrastructure to China.
She added: “DJI poses an unacceptable risk to national security, and it is time to remove Chinese-made drones from the United States.”
The government has already taken action against DJI and the US Department of Commerce placed the company on the Entity List in 2020, preventing US companies from exporting technology to DJI.
The US Treasury later added DJI to its list of Chinese military-industrial complexes, while the US Department of Defense added DJI to the list in 2022 after reports of DJI drones being used to spy on China's Uyghur Muslim minority.
“Lawmakers supporting the bill continue to make inaccurate and unsubstantiated claims about our operations and amplify xenophobic rhetoric,” DJI said in a blog post published in March.
The company says it is not involved in human rights violations, but stresses that it has no control over the use of its products.
The New York Times reported that the House of Representatives is expected to vote in favor of the anti-drone bill introduced by the Chinese Communist Party next month.
