As anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 reaches fever pitch, a former Rockstar Games developer has weighed in on the possibility of further delays for the upcoming blockbuster. Obbe Vermeij, who worked as a technical director at Rockstar North during the development of classics like GTA III and Vice City, recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure fans that the game is likely to stick to its rumored 2025 release window.
In a now-viral post, Vermeij noted that Rockstar “rarely delays a game more than once,” pointing to the studio’s history of prioritizing polish over rushed deadlines. “If they’ve already announced a delay, that’s usually the only one,” he wrote, referencing the company’s past decisions with titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA IV. Both games were infamously pushed back late in development—RDR2 shifted from spring to October 2018, while GTA IV slipped from 2007 to April 2008—but ultimately delivered critically acclaimed experiences.
Vermeij’s comments come amid heightened speculation about GTA 6’s development timeline. Fans were sent into a frenzy earlier this month when a second trailer failed to materialize, sparking fears of internal setbacks. However, industry analysts and insiders have repeatedly emphasized that Rockstar’s silence is typical for the studio, which prefers tightly controlled marketing cycles.
The developer’s remarks also align with recent reports suggesting that Rockstar has entered the final stages of production for GTA 6, which is expected to return to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City. While the company has yet to confirm a specific release date, sources close to the project claim internal targets remain focused on early 2025, with no major roadblocks reported.
For now, fans can take solace in Rockstar’s track record of delivering polished—if occasionally delayed—games. As Vermeij succinctly put it: “When they’re ready to show more, they will. And it’ll be worth the wait.”
Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
