In a move that has left fans both reflective and disappointed, NetherRealm Studios announced today that it will no longer release downloadable content (DLC) or story expansions for Mortal Kombat 1 (2023). The studio confirmed the decision via its official Mortal Kombat X (formerly Twitter) account, marking the end of post-launch support for the latest entry in the iconic fighting franchise.
“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to shift our focus to future projects,” the statement read. “While we’re proud of the content we’ve delivered for Mortal Kombat 1, we’re excited to explore new horizons.” The announcement comes just over a year after the game’s September 2023 launch, during which NetherRealm released multiple DLC fighters, including fan-favorite guest characters like Omni-Man, Homelander, and Peacemaker, as well as the story expansion Aftermath: Reborn.

Community reactions have been mixed. While some players expressed gratitude for the game’s updates, others voiced frustration over unresolved story threads and the absence of highly requested fighters like Jade or Conan the Barbarian. Reddit and Discord forums have buzzed with speculation, with many wondering if NetherRealm’s next project could be Mortal Kombat 12, a new Injustice installment, or an entirely original IP.
Ed Boon, NetherRealm’s creative director, hinted in a recent interview that the studio is “experimenting with bold ideas,” though he declined to share specifics. This aligns with rumors of a potential Marvel vs. DC fighting game, though neither NetherRealm nor parent company Warner Bros. Games has confirmed such plans.
For now, Mortal Kombat 1 players can continue to enjoy existing online modes and seasonal content, but the lack of new narrative DLC leaves the game’s timeline reset storyline at an open-ended juncture. As the community processes the news, one thing is clear: NetherRealm’s legacy of reinventing the fighting genre ensures all eyes will remain on their next fatality-filled reveal.
We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.
