Excitement and disappointment collided this week as reports of a Chrono Trigger remake from Square Enix briefly set the gaming world ablaze, only to be extinguished hours later. The rollercoaster began during a panel at Naples Comicon in Italy, where an attendee claimed a Square Enix representative had “accidentally confirmed” a full remake of the beloved 1995 RPG classic. The rumor spread rapidly across social media, fueled by a now-viral tweet from industry outlet Gematsu (see post here), which cited “trusted sources” backing the claim.
The buzz gained traction when Italian gaming site IGN Italy reported that Square Enix had quietly begun development on the project, echoing similar speculation from a February 2024 My Nintendo News article, which noted the company had recently polled fans about how they’d want a Chrono Trigger remake to be handled. Hopes skyrocketed further when a Reddit thread surfaced, alleging that Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii—one of Chrono Trigger’s original writers—had “confirmed” the remake during a Q&A.
But by the end of the day, the dream unraveled. Square Enix issued a statement clarifying that no such project had been announced, and Horii’s team denied the Reddit claims, attributing them to a mistranslation. The Naples Comicon “leak” was likewise dismissed as a misunderstanding, with event organizers confirming no official Square Enix announcements took place.
Fans, while heartbroken, acknowledged the silver lining: the frenzy proved the enduring demand for Chrono Trigger’s return. As one Twitter user lamented, “This hurt, but maybe Square Enix will finally realize we’re starving for anything Chrono.” For now, the 1995 masterpiece remains untouched—but the outcry suggests that if Square Enix ever does greenlight a remake, they’ll have no shortage of eager players.
