When Volkswagen resurrected its iconic microbus as the all-electric ID.Buzz, it won hearts with its retro-futuristic design and eco-friendly ethos. But for all its charm, the vehicle faced an unexpected backlash over a seemingly small detail: cupholders. Or, more accurately, the lack thereof. Now, the automaker is finally tackling the issue head-on with a new accessory arriving in June—proving that even futuristic EVs can’t escape the universal need for a good coffee run.
The ID.Buzz, launched in Europe in 2022 and recently hitting U.S. shores, was criticized for its sparse interior storage. Early adopters lamented the absence of practical cupholders, a feature even the tiniest economy cars rarely overlook. “It’s ironic that a car designed for road trips and family adventures didn’t prioritize something as basic as holding a latte,” said one frustrated owner in a Reddit thread last year. Volkswagen took note.
According to InsideEVs, the automaker will debut an official cupholder accessory in June 2024. The sleek, modular design integrates seamlessly into the ID.Buzz’s minimalist cabin, attaching to the center console or rear foldable tables. The solution isn’t just functional—it’s customizable, with adjustable grips to accommodate everything from espresso cups to oversized tumblers.
“We listened,” said Klaus Zellmer, Volkswagen’s Head of Sales and Marketing, in a recent statement. “The ID.Buzz is about blending nostalgia with innovation, but we recognize that innovation shouldn’t come at the cost of everyday convenience.” The accessory will be available through Volkswagen dealerships and online, priced at €49 (roughly $53 USD).
For EV enthusiasts, the fix underscores a broader challenge in automotive design: balancing futuristic aesthetics with practicality. “Cupholders might seem trivial, but they’re a dealbreaker for many buyers,” said automotive analyst Maria Fernandez. “Volkswagen’s quick response shows they’re serious about refining the EV experience—one cup of coffee at a time.”
The ID.Buzz isn’t just a nod to the past; it’s a benchmark for modern electric vehicles, boasting up to 300 miles of range and fast-charging capabilities. Yet, its journey highlights how even small oversights can ripple through a product’s reputation. With this update, Volkswagen aims to turn a viral critique into a testament to its adaptability.
As one early adopter put it: “Finally, I can enjoy my road trip without holding my cold brew between my knees.” Sometimes, progress really is measured in cupholders.
