A flaw in a critical battery component prompts the EV maker to proactively address a safety concern that could lead to a sudden loss of propulsion while driving.
In a move underscoring its proactive approach to vehicle safety, Tesla has announced a voluntary recall affecting nearly 13,000 of its recently manufactured Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The recall centers on a defect within the battery pack that could, without warning, cause the car to lose drive power while in motion, a potentially hazardous situation for drivers.
The official recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under recall number 25V690, impacts a specific batch of 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y units built within a five-month window earlier this year.
Which Tesla Models Are Affected?
The recall is not a blanket statement for all Teslas, but is highly specific to vehicles produced between March and August of 2025. The following models and production dates are involved:
- 2025 Tesla Model 3: Vehicles produced from March 8, 2025, through August 12, 2025. Approximately 5,038 units are affected.
- 2026 Tesla Model Y: Vehicles produced from March 15, 2025, through August 15, 2025. Approximately 7,925 units are affected.
This brings the total number of potentially affected vehicles to 12,963.
The Root of the Problem: A Faulty Battery Contactor

The vehicle's digital instrument cluster or touchscreen will also display a visual alert, instructing the driver to pull over safely.
While a sudden loss of power is always disconcerting, the maintained functionality of critical control systems significantly reduces the risk of a crash compared to a complete electrical failure.
