The rumor mill for DJI’s next action camera is churning again, and this time, we have our clearest look yet at what could be a game-changer for vloggers and adventurers. A new leak has surfaced, showcasing the DJI Osmo Action 6 in a promotional-style image and hinting at three significant upgrades that could finally dethrone the competition.
From Rumored Launch to Real-World Leaks
Earlier this month, hopes were high for an imminent announcement. A wave of rumors suggested DJI was preparing to unveil the Osmo Action 6 on October 24th. Unfortunately, that date has come and gone without a peep from the drone and camera giant, leaving those rumors firmly in the "false alarm" category.
However, the story is far from over. Renowned leaker Igor Bogdanov has now posted what appears to be the first official-looking promotional image of the Osmo Action 6. This new leak provides a much clearer and more finalized look at the device than the prototype images that surfaced on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website back in June.
A Sleeker Design with New Mysterious Features
The FCC filings gave us a rough idea of the shape, but Bogdanov's leak reveals the final design language. Most notably, the wide, blank black bar seen on the prototype has been replaced. It now prominently features the "Action" branding, flanked by two new hardware elements.
Industry watchers are speculating that the circular cutout next to the logo is a new aperture for an enhanced microphone system, a common pain point for action cameras in windy conditions. The second element, a small, pill-shaped module, is more mysterious. It could be a small LED fill light to help in low-light selfies or, perhaps more intriguingly, a dedicated subject-tracking sensor for improved vlogging and filming.
Three Major Hardware Upgrades Revealed
While the design tweaks are interesting, the real meat of this leak lies in the potential hardware specifications gleaned from the camera lens itself. The inscriptions surrounding the main sensor have revealed some tantalizing details that, if accurate, represent a substantial leap over the current Osmo Action 5 Pro.
- A Larger Sensor for Superior Image Quality: The most significant upgrade appears to be the sensor. The leak suggests the Osmo Action 6 will be equipped with a 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor. This is a notable step up from the 1/1.3-inch sensor found in the Osmo Action 5 Pro (curr. $349 on Amazon). A larger sensor typically means better light-gathering capability, reduced noise in low-light conditions, and improved dynamic range. This would directly address one of the key limitations of action cameras and could finally close the gap with traditional mirrorless cameras for certain shots.
- The Game-Changer: A Variable Aperture: In a move that is virtually unheard of in the action camera world, the leak points to the inclusion of a variable aperture. The lens inscription suggests it could switch between f/2.0 and f/4.0. Why is this a big deal? A wide aperture like f/2.0 is great for low light, but it creates a very shallow depth of field, which can make it tricky to keep everything in focus during fast-paced action. An f/4.0 aperture allows more of the scene to be in sharp focus and can also enable motion blur effects (like smoothing out flowing water) without needing a neutral density filter. This level of creative control would be a first for the category.
- A Refined Field of View (FoV): The leak also indicates a slight tweak to the field of view, potentially dropping to 135° from the ultra-wide angles common on previous models.
