8BitDo Unveils FlipPad: A Clever Portrait-Mode Controller for Your Smartphone

The 8BitDo FlipPad mobile controller will be released this summer.

Just in time for CES 2026, 8BitDo has pulled a surprise reveal. While the gaming accessory maker has a "pro" controller slated for a formal unveiling at the big tech show, it has stolen some of its own thunder by announcing the 8BitDo FlipPad—a unique, portrait-oriented mobile gaming controller that's turning heads.

A Different Approach to Mobile Gaming

While 8BitDo is no stranger to smartphone controllers, the FlipPad tackles mobile gaming from a fresh angle. Unlike their popular 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller (which holds your phone in a familiar landscape orientation), the FlipPad is designed specifically for portrait mode gaming.

This makes it a potential game-changer for a huge library of mobile titles—from classic arcade shoot 'em ups and puzzle games to modern hits like Monster Hunter Now and Pokémon GO—that are primarily played with the phone upright.

Inspired by the Past, Built for the Present

The design is both nostalgic and ingenious. The controller features a USB Type-C connector that plugs directly into your phone's port. Then, in a move that will delight fans of retro flip phones, the controller body flips up to clasp onto the lower half of your screen, leaving the top portion free for gameplay.

Aesthetically, it sports 8BitDo's beloved G Classic design theme, seen on controllers like the 8BitDo Pro 3. The initial reveal shows a sharp look with a black D-Pad, burgundy ABXY action buttons, and gray Start/Select keys. Six additional white buttons hint at extra functionality, though their purpose is yet to be detailed.

Compatibility, Competition, and Availability

8BitDo confirms the FlipPad will work with both Android and iOS devices and is officially supported by Apple—a key seal of approval for iPhone users. Details on pricing are still under wraps, but a full announcement with more specifics is expected during CES this week.

When it launches this summer, the FlipPad won't have the niche to itself. It will enter a growing market of snap-on controllers, going up against rivals like the Abxylute M4 Snap-On Controller and the MCON Magnetic Controller. 8BitDo's strong reputation for quality and its unique portrait-focused design could give it a significant edge.

For now, gamers who prefer a more traditional landscape experience can check out the current model, the 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller on Amazon. But for those waiting to enhance their portrait-mode gaming library, the innovative FlipPad is a summer release to watch.
