In a move that has frustrated and confused the retro gaming community, Anbernic appears to have silently nerfed one of its newer handheld consoles. The company, which hasn't released a new handheld since the RG477V in December, has been focusing on its upcoming RG G01 wireless controller. Meanwhile, eagle-eyed fans and sites like Retro Handhelds have discovered a significant, unannounced specification drop for the clamshell RG34XX SP.
A Promising Contender, Suddenly Weakened
Released in May of 2025, the RG34XX SP was Anbernic's direct answer to competitors like the Powkiddy V90S and the Miyoo Flip. It built upon the beloved RG35XX SP formula by adding two analog joysticks, greatly expanding its gameplay compatibility. The most notable upgrade at launch, however, was a RAM boost. Anbernic doubled the memory to 2GB, a move praised for improving performance in more demanding 3D emulation and for playing games through PortMaster.
That key advantage has now vanished. Without any official announcement or product listing change alert, Anbernic's official website now lists the RG34XX SP as containing only 1GB of RAM. Community tracking suggests this change went live around January 21.
Radio Silence from Anbernic, Confirmation from Support
Anbernic has not issued any public statement regarding this substantial downgrade. The only acknowledgment comes from customer support channels. When directly questioned by concerned buyers, Anbernic's support team has been instructed to confirm that new units will ship with the reduced 1GB of RAM.
This lack of transparency has sparked criticism on forums and social media. As discussed on Reddit's SBCGaming community, potential buyers feel blindsided by the change, questioning the value of the current model.
