Electronic Arts pushes back the next major content drop, promising more polish as community frustration mounts.
In an announcement that has split the Battlefield 6 community, developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts have confirmed a delay for the game’s anticipated Season 2. The news, shared in a January 13 post on the official Battlefield subreddit, states the extra time will be used for additional "polishing and quality assurance."
The developers extended thanks to players for their support since the game’s blockbuster launch last October, which EA has touted as the most successful in franchise history. The post also looked back on Season 1, describing it as “packed” with content including the debut of the REDSEC battle royale mode, the California Resistance narrative events, the Winter Offensive event, and numerous gameplay patches.
Yet, this retrospective has done little to quell a growing wave of player dissatisfaction. While the publisher celebrates the season’s breadth, a significant portion of the community feels the content was wide but shallow, a sentiment now fueling a heated response to the Season 2 delay.
Bridging the Gap with an "Extension Update"
To fill the extended wait, EA has scheduled an "Extension Update" for January 20. This stopgap measure is designed to maintain player engagement with additional rewards and refreshed activities before Season 2 arrives.
According to the announcement, the current Battle Pass will remain active and be expanded with new weekly challenges, an extra bonus reward path, and several double XP periods. The update will also shine a stronger spotlight on curated Portal experiences, the community-run sandbox mode. Full details will be available in the patch notes on the official Battlefield 6 website.
A Community's Patience Wears Thin: "Yet Another Misstep"
The official framing of the delay as a commitment to quality has been met with largely negative reactions online. On platforms like Reddit, many long-time fans have voiced deep frustration, viewing this as part of a recurring pattern for the franchise’s live-service strategy.
The characterization of Season 1 as “packed” has particularly struck a nerve. Critics are quick to counter that the season was light on permanent, core content—offering only a limited number of new maps, few new weapons, and an overreliance on time-limited events. “Bugs and technical issues have been the most consistent ‘content’ we’ve received,” one player remarked sarcastically in the ongoing discussion.
Much of the criticism is directed at REDSEC, the free-to-play battle royale mode. A common sentiment among core Battlefield players is that REDSEC represents a misallocation of development resources, pulling focus away from the classic, large-scale modes like Conquest and Rush that defined the series. This has led to a feeling among paying customers of the main game that their preferred experience is being sidelined.
Further compounding the frustration are persistent complaints about progression systems, described as overly grindy and convoluted, with rewards sometimes failing to unlock correctly.
Season 2: A Make-or-Break Moment for Battlefield 6?
Amid the disappointment, only a small subset of the community believes the delay will translate into meaningful improvements. Hopes are cautiously pinned on Season 2 launching with a substantial amount of content, with many calling for three to four large-scale maps to truly revitalize the experience.
However, expectations remain low, with fears of more reskinned assets and temporary modes persisting. For a growing number of players, Season 2 is shaping up to be a make-or-break moment for Battlefield 6. The sentiment, as echoed across forums, is clear: if the next major update fails to deliver a robust and polished experience that addresses core complaints, a significant portion of the player base may finally walk away.
The full scope of the community’s reaction can be seen in the original Reddit thread, which continues to gather hundreds of comments from passionate players. You can read the detailed community discussion and the official announcement here.
