The retro gaming accessory wave shows no signs of slowing down. 8BitDo, a favorite among classic gaming enthusiasts, has officially begun shipping its Classic Grey variant of the popular 8BitDo 64 wireless controller, adding a subtle new option to its lineup. But the bigger news is what’s coming next: a second wave of translucent, nostalgia-inducing editions that tap directly into Nintendo’s own history.

The Classic Grey model, announced back in November, started reaching customers at the end of January. It carries a slight premium, retailing at $44.99$5 more than the original Black and White launch colors, which remain available for $39.99. This move follows the industry pattern of using color variants to reignite interest in a successful product.

However, color is just the beginning. Last November, 8BitDo made a splash by announcing eight 'Funtastic Limited Editions' with translucent shells, designed to match the equally vibrant Analogue 3D—the highly anticipated FPGA-based console that plays original Nintendo 64 cartridges.

The demand for this aesthetic is undeniable. As seen in a recent social media announcement, the Analogue 3D Funtastic Limited Editions sold out almost instantly upon release. Interestingly, while the console itself remains elusive, 8BitDo has managed to keep its matching translucent controllers in stock on its website for nearly two months since their reveal.

Now, 8BitDo is doubling down. The company has announced five new "Prototype Limited Editions" set to launch next week. These aren't just random colors; they're described as homages to the five prototype colors Nintendo allegedly experimented with for the original Nintendo 64 console before settling on its iconic charcoal grey.

Scheduled to go on sale from 16:00 UTC on February 9 via the 8BitDo Shop, the new finishes are:

  • Atomic Purple
  • Extreme Green
  • Ocean
  • Ghost
  • Glacier

The launch is timed to coincide with another Analogue 3D console drop, suggesting continued close collaboration between the two companies. While 8BitDo has not confirmed final pricing or shipping timelines, it is expected these Prototype editions will be priced similarly to the Funtastic series, at $44.99 each.

For collectors and players looking to pair modern wireless convenience with a heavy dose of 90s flair, the 8BitDo 64 controller continues to be a top-tier choice. With its excellent button feel, Hall Effect joysticks (for no drift), and now an expanding palette of iconic colors, it solidifies its position as the go-aftermarket controller for Nintendo 64 purists and newcomers alike.

Where to Find Them:

  • The Classic Grey, Black, and White 8BitDo 64 controllers are available now on Amazon and other retailers.
  • The first wave of Funtastic Limited Editions (Clear, Fire, Gold, Grape, Ice, Jungle, Smoke, Watermelon) are currently in stock on the 8BitDo website.
  • The new Prototype Limited Editions will be exclusive to the 8BitDo Shop starting February 9.
