Dyson Goes Ultra-Slim: The New PencilWash Tackles Wet Spills with Hygienic, Filterless Flair

Dyson’s PencilWash wet and dry cleaner

If you thought Dyson had perfected the art of the ultra-niche vacuum with the PencilVac in 2025, think again. The British tech giant is back with a logical—and for many, a more practical—evolution. Meet the Dyson PencilWash, a "wet and dry" cleaner that takes the same slender, furniture-gliding design of its predecessor but swaps the dustbin for a water tank.

Launched globally this week, the PencilWash is Dyson’s answer to a very specific problem: how do you clean up a wet spill in those hard-to-reach places without hauling out a bulky bucket or a full-sized floor washer?

A Filterless Approach to Mopping

At first glance, the PencilWash looks almost identical to the original PencilVac. It maintains that distinctively long, wand-like silhouette. But look closer, and you’ll notice the engineering shift has occurred at the business end.

Instead of relying on suction and a filter to trap dust, the PencilWash uses a combination of water and mechanical agitation. The secret sauce lies in the roller mop head, which is wrapped in a "high-density microfibre fabric." Dyson claims this fabric is packed with an astonishing 64,000 filaments per square centimeter.

As this roller spins rapidly, it agitates the floor to lift dirt and stains. Simultaneously, an internal scraping system works like a squeegee, extracting the now-dirty water from the fabric and collecting debris into a separate compartment. Because there is no filter for air to pass through, Dyson argues this is a more hygienic method for dealing with liquid messes. There are no damp filters to clean or replace, which often become breeding grounds for bacteria in traditional wet-dry vacuums.

Designed for Real Homes (and Low Furniture)

The form factor is where the PencilWash truly shines. Dyson has clearly focused on the ergonomics of daily chores.

  • The Reach: The machine can recline to an almost flat 170 degrees, standing just 6 inches (~15 cm) tall. This allows it to effortlessly slide under sofas, beds, and kitchen cabinets where spills often roll to hide.
  • The Weight: It tips the scales at a manageable 4.9 lbs (~2.2 kg) , making it light enough to maneuver with one hand.
  • The Grip: The handle is a slender 1.5 inches (~38 mm) wide, designed to feel natural in the hand rather than bulky.

Power and Practicality

Don’t let the slim profile fool you; Dyson has packed enough utility for a decent-sized clean-up session. The onboard 10 fl. oz (300 ml) clean water tank is sufficient to treat an area of up to 1,076 ft² (100 m²) .

You get two power modes to toggle between, depending on whether you are spot-cleaning a splash of juice or doing a full refresh of the kitchen floor. However, the device is not designed for marathon cleaning sessions; you can expect around 30 minutes of run time per charge, with a full recharge taking about 3.5 hours.

Pricing and Global Availability

The Dyson PencilWash is rolling out now, though availability varies wildly depending on where you live.

For customers in key European markets—including Spain, France, and Germany—the device is available immediately for €349.

However, if you rush to order on Amazon, you might face a wait. Listings currently advise customers that while they can place an order, the product will not ship until September due to high demand or initial stock allocation.

In the United States, Dyson is sticking to a firm release date of March 17th. The retail price is set at $349, putting it in direct competition with other high-end hard floor cleaners.

The Verdict?

With the PencilWash, Dyson isn't trying to replace your weekly mop and bucket. Instead, it is targeting the niche between a quick wipe with a paper towel and getting the full-sized mopping robot out of its dock. It is the latest example of Dyson applying its core engineering principles—cyclonic inspiration, slim design, and hygienic disposal—to a new category of home care.

The official announcement, detailed in the PR Newswire release , emphasizes that this is "the slimmest¹ ultra-light and hygienic wet and dry cleaner" on the market. Whether that slimness translates into a must-buy tool for spill-prone households remains to be seen, but for those tired of bending and stretching to reach under the couch with a damp cloth, the PencilWash might just be the perfect fit.
