The Google Home logo is shown as Google rolls out a March update that adds “Live Search” for live camera streams to Google Home Premium Advanced.

In a significant leap for smart home technology, Google has begun rolling out a powerful new feature called "Live Search" for subscribers of its premium home monitoring service. The update, detailed in the company’s March 2, 2026, release notes, allows users to query their live camera feeds in real-time to get an immediate understanding of what’s happening at home.

According to the official What's new in Google Home support page, users on the Advanced plan of Google Home Premium can now use Live Search on camera streams "to understand the current state of your home." This marks a notable upgrade from previous functionality, which limited camera searching to historical, recorded footage.

How Live Search Works

Instead of scrolling through hours of saved video to find a specific moment, homeowners can now ask Google about their current environment. For example, a user might inquire, "Is the front door open?" or "Did the kids leave their bikes in the driveway?" and the system will analyze the live stream from compatible cameras to provide an answer. This shift from reviewing the past to interrogating the present represents a more dynamic, AI-driven approach to home awareness.

Supported Devices and Availability

While the release notes are light on specific hardware details, the feature is designed to work within the Google Home ecosystem. The Google Store pricing page indicates that the Google Home Premium subscription supports Google Nest cameras and doorbells. However, Google cautions that feature availability can vary significantly based on the specific product model and the user's country.

Pricing Tiers for Google Home Premium

The new Live Search capability is reserved for the top-tier plan. As listed on the Google Store:

  • Google Home Premium Advanced: Priced at $20/month or $200/year. This plan unlocks Live Search and other advanced AI features.
  • Google Home Premium Standard: Available at $10/month, offering a baseline of enhanced features without the real-time camera analysis.

Google also reminded users in its update notes that even with the latest version of the app, new features like Live Search "may take time to roll out to everyone," suggesting a phased global release.

Broader Improvements in the March 2026 Update

The introduction of Live Search is just one part of a larger overhaul of the Google Home experience. The March 2026 update also details significant enhancements to Gemini for Home behavior:

  • Better Device Targeting: Improved accuracy for managing commands across multiple homes, reducing confusion about which device in which location should respond.
  • More Reliable Commands: General improvements to the execution of smart home routines and voice instructions.
  • Enhanced Informational Responses: Updated quality for when users ask the Assistant general knowledge questions.

On the app interface side, Google is expanding the functionality of its automation editor. Users will find new starters and conditions to create more complex and personalized routines. Additionally, the company is gradually rolling out expanded controls for the Nest x Yale Lock, giving users more granular security options directly within the Home app.

With this update, Google continues to push its smart home platform toward a more proactive and intuitive future, leveraging AI to turn passive cameras into active sources of real-time information.
