| The new Marathon update cuts thermal scope effectiveness, eases some UESC encounters, adds new contracts, and fixes multiple gameplay and stability issues. |
In the ever-evolving landscape of Marathon, survival often depends on adapting to the latest shifts in the meta. Today, Bungie rolls out Update 1.0.0.4, a substantial patch that delivers a broad balance pass across combat, item economy, contracts, and stability. The update aims to smooth out progression blockers, refine map flow, and adjust the playing field for both veterans and newcomers.
Among the most significant changes are a noticeable reduction in thermal scope effectiveness, softer UESC enemy encounters, increased resources on the Perimeter map, and the arrival of two major new contract types: NuCaloric and Traxus.
Here is everything you need to know about the latest patch.
The Big Shift: Thermal Scopes Get a Significant Nerf
For players who have relied on thermal optics to pierce the darkness of Marathon’s hostile zones, Update 1.0.0.4 brings a substantial recalibration. The patch targets thermal scopes directly, reducing target visibility and slashing the maximum distance for thermal highlighting across every major weapon class.
The changes are numerical but have massive implications for engagement strategies:
- Pistols: Highlight range drops to 40 meters (down from 55 meters).
- Rifles, LMGs, and SMGs: Now highlight targets out to 60 meters (down from 65 meters).
- Precision Rifles: Reduced to 80 meters (down from 100 meters).
- Snipers: The biggest reduction sees the range fall to 100 meters (down from a staggering 180 meters).
This adjustment means long-range pickings will require more traditional spotting or riskier close-quarters reconnaissance. In a small compensation for run-and-gun players, the Overrun weapon receives a slight buff, with its default ammo capacity increased by five rounds.
Combat Flow: UESC Encounters Become Less Tedious
One of the primary goals of this update is to reduce the "bullet sponge" feeling in PvE encounters without stripping away the tension. The development team has tuned UESC combat to be less resource-draining.
Most UESC enemies now have slightly lower health, and UESC bosses have had their shield health reduced by a small amount. According to the developer note, the intent is to reduce the number of bullets and healing resources players have to expend in these fights while maintaining the "friction" that makes UESC encounters threatening.
Additional combat quality-of-life fixes include:
- A fix for an issue that could cause instant death during confinement events.
- Resolution of a bug where shield break screen effects would persist when heal-over-time and damage-over-time effects were active simultaneously.
- Audio adjustments now make gunfire and explosions audible from farther away, improving spatial awareness.
Economy and Loot: More Resources, Less EMP Spam
Surviving the endgame often comes down to resource management, and the item economy sees several player-friendly changes aimed at keeping squads supplied.
Perimeter, a key map for mid-tier loot, can now spawn more Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates, easing the pressure on supply runs. Furthermore, the free Sponsored Kits from MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne will now start with more ammo, giving players a better foothold right from deployment.
On the enemy side, UESC Grenadiers will drop EMP grenades less frequently. This slight reduction in utility pressure should make engagements feel less chaotic and prevent players from being locked down by constant disables.
Rook Improvements and a Critical Tradeoff
The synthetic companion Rook receives multiple fixes and progression adjustments. An issue where backpacks could be deleted while exfilling with Rook has been squashed, and Rook’s position now displays properly on the map screen.
To incentivize team play, the CyAc reputation gain from exfilling with Rook has been increased. Rook will also now receive the same faction reputation bonus for exfilling that solo players already enjoy.
However, there is a critical tradeoff for those chasing specific gear. Rook’s WSTR shotgun will now spawn as Compromised. This means players must utilize a Matter Fixative during the run if they hope to exfil with the weapon intact.
New Contracts and Navigation Tweaks
For contractors looking for fresh objectives, the update introduces two new mission types: the NuCaloric Contract and the Traxus Contract.
To help players stay on target, objective navigation has been made significantly easier. Default-distance objective nav points will now appear from 20 meters away, doubling the previous range of 10 meters. This should reduce the amount of time players spend blindly searching for the next step in a complex zone.
The patch also reduces the difficulty of the UESC Commander encounter and fixes a bug where enemy crews could trigger NuCal contract voice-over audio and subtitles from unrealistic distances.
Zone Changes: Outpost’s Broken Wing Route Disabled
In a notable shift for map strategy, the Outpost zone sees a temporary closure. The switch access route to the Broken Wing has been disabled.
In the developer note, the team explains that the current version of that entrance "trivialized access into the Pinwheel." The plan is to retune the route so it remains a quieter entry point, but with a risk and reward profile that matches the rest of the area. Importantly, other ways into the Pinwheel—including another silent method—remain available for players who know the map.

Store, Stability, and Quality of Life
Rounding out the patch are numerous technical fixes and store adjustments aimed at polishing the user experience.
Store & Rewards Fixes:
- Silk balances now update correctly without requiring a restart.
- Bundle prices display properly without visual glitches.
- Cosmetic items will no longer incorrectly show a "savings" label when sold at full price.
- The LUX bundle size has been increased.
Technical Stability:
- Fixed a rare issue that could crash dedicated servers.
- Resolved several client-side crash problems.
- Addressed crashes occurring when using or typing quickly with an IME keyboard. While some issues may persist with third-party IME software, the Windows built-in IME is suggested as a temporary workaround.
General Fixes:
- A bug where doors could lock and block completion of the new-player intro mission has been fixed.
- Resolved an issue with a stuck text chat window.
- Updated the description for Perimeter (Beginner) on the Zone Select screen to better reflect the difficulty.
- Removed an extended black screen that occurred during map loading.
With this update, Marathon continues to refine its core loop, balancing the power of high-tier optics with the accessibility of resources and the challenge of its enemies. Whether you are hunting for a Compromised WSTR shotgun or diving into the new NuCaloric contracts, Update 1.0.0.4 reshapes the playing field for everyone.
