BARCELONA — If there was ever any doubt that ZTE is serious about capturing the attention of the mobile gaming community, the company’s presence at the Mobile World Congress this week has put those rumors to rest. Walking the floor of the Fira de Barcelona, it’s impossible to miss the flashy new additions to the Neo series.
While the spotlight often falls on flagship foldables and AI-driven cameras, ZTE has spent 2026 focusing on a different type of user: the "mobile gamer." This week, the company unveiled a slate of new devices, including the massive Neo 5 Max (which we covered in detail here), but it’s the ZTE Neo 5 GT that is generating the most noise for those who like their gaming with a side of cyberpunk aesthetics.
A Successor with a Chip on its Shoulder
The ZTE Neo 5 GT arrives as the direct successor to last year’s Neo 3 GT, and on paper, it looks like every bit the upgrade fans were hoping for. While the previous model relied on a Unisoc T9100 chipset, ZTE has made a significant pivot to MediaTek for this generation.
Under the hood, the Neo 5 GT packs the Dimensity 7400. This is the same chipset currently powering popular devices like the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G and the Motorola Edge 60 Neo, which places it firmly in the upper-mid-range tier. For gamers, this change is critical. According to internal ZTE benchmarks, the shift from the Unisoc to the Dimensity 7400 should yield roughly a 20% performance improvement in processing and graphics rendering. That’s the difference between "playable" and "smooth" when it comes to demanding battle royale titles.
To ensure that raw power doesn't get bogged down, ZTE is offering configurations of up to 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. This means you can keep your entire game library installed without constantly shuffling files to the cloud.
Cooling, Triggers, and "Gamer Aesthetics"
However, a phone marketed toward gamers needs more than just a fast processor. The Neo 5 GT embraces its niche with open arms. The design language features exposed circuitry elements and rear RGB lighting—a staple for gaming peripherals that has finally found a permanent home on a smartphone backplate.
But the most practical gaming features are hidden just beneath the surface. ZTE has integrated a small active cooling solution combined with a vapor chamber. For anyone who has felt their phone throttle (slow down) mid-match due to overheating, this is a welcome addition. It allows the Dimensity 7400 to run at peak speeds for longer periods.
Furthermore, the device features dedicated shoulder triggers. These physical buttons give users a console-like grip, allowing for faster reaction times without fumbling with on-screen touch controls.
Powering this gaming beast is a massive 6,210 mAh battery. When you are gaming at high refresh rates, battery drains fast, but this capacity should easily get heavy users through a full day of mixed use. And when you do run low, the 80W fast charging support means you can top up significantly during a short coffee break.
A Display Built for Speed
Of course, all this performance is useless without a screen that can keep up. The Neo 5 GT boasts a 6.8-inch display with a sharp 1.5K resolution. While the resolution is great for media consumption, the refresh rate is where it shines for gamers. The panel supports a buttery-smooth 144 Hz refresh rate, ensuring that high-frame-rate games look incredibly fluid.
ZTE is also claiming a peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits. While this number is likely achievable only in specific HDR scenarios, it suggests the phone will have no problem remaining visible under direct sunlight—perfect for outdoor gaming sessions or navigating with GPS.
For the Controller Purists: The Nubia Gamepad 2
Recognizing that touchscreens aren't for everyone, ZTE’s gaming sub-brand Nubia also took the stage to unveil a new accessory. The Nubia Gamepad 2 caters to the purists who prefer analog sticks and physical buttons.
Designed to clamp onto your smartphone, the Gamepad 2 offers a more conventional controller experience. It bridges the gap between mobile and console, making cloud gaming services or emulated classics feel right at home. While specific details on the connectivity and battery life are still trickling out, the presence of the accessory at the booth signals ZTE’s intent to build a broader ecosystem around mobile gaming.
Pricing and Availability
For those interested in upgrading their mobile gaming rig, the wait isn't long. ZTE has confirmed that the Neo 5 GT will begin rolling out across European markets starting in April 2026.
The pricing is positioned aggressively. With a starting price of €399 (approximately $465) , the Neo 5 GT undercuts many "flagship killers" while offering dedicated gaming features you can’t find on standard mid-rangers.
If you are looking to get into mobile gaming or want to upgrade your current setup with a controller for a more immersive experience, you might also want to check out the latest accessories available to pair with your new device. With the Neo 5 GT, ZTE is making a clear statement: you don't need to spend a thousand dollars to get a fantastic, feature-rich gaming experience. The combination of a high-capacity battery, dedicated cooling, and shoulder triggers makes this one of the most intriguing mid-range releases of MWC 2026.
