| Unofficial render of the rumored Asus Pad - edited |
After years of silence in the tablet space, Asus appears to be plotting a comeback – and the first leaked renders look surprisingly polished.
Let’s be honest: when you think of Android tablets, names like Samsung Galaxy Tab, OnePlus Pad, or even Xiaomi Pad probably come to mind. Asus? Not so much. The company’s ZenPad series has been gathering dust for what feels like forever, with the last notable update arriving back in 2016. But a fresh leak suggests that Asus is finally ready to jump back into the game – and it’s bringing something rather intriguing.
According to a detailed report from Android Headlines , the Taiwanese manufacturer is working on a brand-new Android tablet simply called the “Asus Pad.” Yes, the naming is straightforward, but the specs and design appear to be anything but basic.
A design that actually looks modern
The leaked renders show a clean, minimalist tablet that wouldn’t look out of place next to today’s premium slates. The front is flat and modern, while the back features gently rounded edges for a more comfortable grip – a small touch that makes a big difference during long reading or video sessions. Around back, there’s just a single camera, keeping things uncluttered. No wild protrusions or confusing lens arrays here.
What really catches the eye, though, is the display. The Asus Pad is rumored to pack a 12.2-inch dual-layer OLED panel with a 144 Hz refresh rate. Dual-layer OLED is typically found on high-end professional monitors and some flagship tablets (like Apple’s latest iPad Pro), because it boosts brightness and longevity while reducing burn-in risks. If this leak holds up, Asus could be delivering a screen that rivals the very best on the market – a bold move for a brand that’s been absent from the tablet race.
Thin, light, and surprisingly powerful on paper
Weight and thickness often make or break a tablet’s daily usability, and here the Asus Pad seems to ace it. The leak claims the device will measure just 6.5 mm thick and weigh 523 grams. For comparison, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro weighs 682 grams and is 6.4 mm thick. So Asus is essentially matching Apple’s thinness while coming in significantly lighter – impressive.
Under the hood, a 9,000 mAh battery is said to keep the lights on, with support for fast charging (though exact wattage isn’t mentioned yet). That’s a healthy capacity for a 12-inch tablet, and paired with an efficient OLED panel, battery life could be a strong selling point.
Entertainment features also get a mention: stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. So whether you’re binge-watching Netflix or hopping on a Zoom call, the audio experience should be more than an afterthought.
A clever case that does double duty
Asus isn’t stopping at just the tablet itself. The leak also shows a multifunctional case that doubles as a kickstand. The renders demonstrate at least two different viewing angles – likely one for typing and another for media consumption. It’s not exactly a full-blown keyboard cover, but for users who want a simple stand without carrying extra bulk, this could be a welcome accessory.
The big unknowns: processor, RAM, pricing, and availability
Here’s where things get fuzzy. The Android Headlines report doesn’t specify what chipset the Asus Pad will use, nor does it mention RAM or storage options. Will Asus go with a MediaTek Dimensity flagship? A Snapdragon 8-series? Or perhaps something more mid-range to hit a lower price point? No one knows yet.
Pricing and release date are also complete mysteries. Given that Asus hasn’t officially confirmed anything, we could be looking at a late 2025 or even 2026 launch. The company might be waiting to see how the Android tablet market evolves – especially with Google pushing large-screen optimizations in recent Android versions.
What OS will it run?
The publication doesn’t explicitly state the operating system, but Android is the obvious candidate. Asus has no other mature tablet OS in its portfolio, and the ZenPad series historically ran Android. A more interesting question is whether Asus will offer meaningful software updates – a pain point for many Android tablet makers. If the company wants to compete with Samsung’s four-year update promise, it’ll need to step up its game.
Why this matters (even if you’re not an Asus fan)
For years, the Android tablet space has been a two-horse race: Samsung dominates the premium end, while Lenovo and Xiaomi fight for the mid-range and budget segments. OnePlus recently entered the fray with its Pad series, and now Asus seems ready to rejoin. More competition is always good for consumers, especially if Asus delivers that gorgeous dual-layer OLED at a reasonable price.
Of course, this is all based on a single leak. Renders can be deceiving, and specs often change before launch. But the fact that Asus is even exploring a new tablet after such a long hiatus is noteworthy. The company has proven it can make excellent hardware – just look at the ROG Phone series or its Zenbook laptops. If that same engineering DNA flows into the Asus Pad, we might finally have a compelling new option for Android fans.
For now, take everything with a grain of salt. But keep an eye on Android Headlines for any updates – they’ve been reliable with leaks in the past, and they might be the first to break news on pricing and specs when Asus finally decides to talk.
What do you think? Would you consider an Asus tablet if it packs a dual-layer OLED and a 144 Hz screen? Or has the company waited too long? Drop your thoughts below – and stay tuned for more leaks as they surface.
