Final Fantasy XIV’s ‘Evercold’ Expansion Brings a Deep Freeze, an Evangelion Crossover, and a Battle System Revolution in January 2027

Final Fantasy XIV's next expansion, Evercold, is coming January 2027.

It’s going to be a chilly January for Final Fantasy XIV fans.

If you thought the Source couldn’t get any colder, think again. During the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida took the stage to pull back the curtain on the next major expansion, and it’s a frosty one. Titled Evercold, this isn’t just a new chapter—it’s the beginning of a brand new saga called the Godless Realms Saga, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious updates to the critically acclaimed MMO yet.

Square Enix announced that the expansion is set to launch in January 2027, transporting Warriors of Light to a world overcome by an unyielding frost. The haunting teaser trailer, which you can watch below, offers a glimpse into the mysterious dangers awaiting players on the Fourth. But beyond the icy aesthetic, Evercold is packing heat with two new jobs, a crossover with a legendary anime, and a controversial overhaul of the entire combat system.

A Battle System Divided: Reborn vs. Evolved

Perhaps the biggest headline from the keynote is the unprecedented decision to split the game’s combat into two distinct modes. For years, players have debated the homogenization of jobs, but Square Enix is offering a compromise.

Upon the release of Evercold, players will choose between Reborn Mode and Evolved Mode.

  • Reborn Mode will maintain the current combat system and job mechanics, offering tweaks and quality-of-life improvements familiar to veteran players.
  • Evolved Mode is where things get wild. According to the press release, this mode places a "greater emphasis on job identity," potentially bringing back unique buffs, debuffs, and rotations that many felt were lost in recent updates.

However, there is a significant catch. The two new jobs arriving in Evercold—one Tank and one Physical Ranged DPS (names TBD at press time)—will only be playable using Evolved Mode. This is a bold gamble by the development team, essentially forcing players who want to try the new toys to engage with this new philosophy. The level cap will also rise from 100 to 110, giving players plenty of grinding to do in the snow.

The Elephants in the Room: Evangelion and Nintendo

While the frostbite setting is cool, the collaboration announced during the keynote is absolutely surreal. Square Enix is partnering with khara, Inc. to bring the cultural juggernaut EVANGELION into Eorzea.

Titled EVANGELION - Ghosts of Desire, this new Alliance Raid series will weave the iconography and themes of the legendary mecha anime into the FFXIV framework. Given the emotional and psychological weight of Evangelion, paired with Yoshida’s love for dramatic storytelling, this has the potential to be the most unique raid experience since the Nier collaboration. Details are scarce, but expect giant monstrous threats and a lot of orange juice memes in the near future.

In a move that surprised exactly no one but delighted many, the keynote closed with Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu announcing a native version of FFXIV for the Nintendo Switch 2. That version is arriving earlier, in August 2026, with an early access period to test server stability before the full launch. This means by the time Evercold drops in January, the player base will be larger (and more portable) than ever.

Shadowbringers Joins the Free Trial (Yes, Really)

If you have a friend who has been "waiting to try the game," their final excuse just evaporated.

On April 28 (specifically with Patch 7.5), the ever-generous Free Trial is expanding yet again. Not only does it include A Realm Reborn and the Heavensward and Stormblood expansions, but it will now also include the critically acclaimed Shadowbringers (up to Patch 5.58).

For the math-inclined, that is hundreds of hours of award-winning gameplay equivalent to four full Final Fantasy titles, with no limit on playtime. It is arguably the best deal in gaming, and it just got better.

What Else is Coming in Evercold?

Beyond the battle changes and giant robot crossovers, the expansion is packing the usual wealth of high-end content:

  • New Cities & Areas: Distinctive new zones to explore (presumably all covered in snow).
  • PvP Updates: Ongoing support for the competitive scene.
  • Raids: A brand new raid series, a new Ultimate raid (Dancing Mad was confirmed for Patch 7.5, but Evercold brings its own), new dungeons, and new trials.
  • System Overhauls: "Seasons" will change how rewards are earned, and an Armoury Update is coming to make playing multiple jobs easier.

With the Dawntrail patch cycle wrapping up (Patch 7.5 drops April 28, featuring the final part of Echoes of Vana’diel), the road to Evercold looks packed. Whether you are Team Reborn or Team Evolved, January 2027 is shaping up to be a very cold—but very exciting—month for the Warrior of Light.
