| iPhone Ultra/Fold leaked schematic - edited for illustration purposes. |
The first truly detailed look at Apple’s foldable iPhone has arrived – and it’s nothing like we expected.
Just when the rumor mill was settling on a “chunky” first-gen foldable from Apple, a new set of technical schematics has flipped the script. Sourced from a case manufacturer and shared by the reliable Korean leaker yeux1122, these precise drawings claim to reveal the real dimensions, camera layout, and even the color options of the long-rumored iPhone Ultra (or iPhone Fold – Apple’s naming is still up in the air).
And the biggest surprise? It might not be a thick boy after all.
From “Chunky” to Champion: The Thickness Plot Thickens
For weeks, whispers suggested Apple’s maiden foldable would measure a worrying 11mm when folded – noticeably thicker than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Google’s Pixel Fold. Critics were already sharpening their pens.
But if these leaked internal drawings are accurate, those concerns were overblown. The schematics show a folded profile of just 9.23mm.
Let that sink in. That’s thinner than many “non-foldable” flagship phones from just a few years ago. In fact, at 9.2mm, the iPhone Fold would sit right alongside the slimmest foldables on the market today – including recent efforts from Honor, Oppo, and Samsung. Holding it folded, the leak suggests, would feel remarkably similar to holding an iPhone 17 Pro.
Unfolded, the chassis reportedly measures an impressively svelte 4.7mm – comparable to an iPad mini without a case.
👉 One caveat: the camera bump. Apple’s signature protrusion adds nearly 4.5mm, pushing the maximum thickness to 13.7mm at the lens housing. So while the body is thin, that square island will still dominate the back.
Massive Camera Bump, Two Sensors (No Telephoto?)
The schematics highlight a surprisingly large camera plateau. According to the drawings, Apple is sticking with just two 48MP sensors – a main wide and an ultra-wide. No dedicated telephoto lens is visible, at least not in this iteration.
That’s a bold choice for a device rumored to cost north of $2,500. However, it aligns with recent reports that Apple is prioritizing slimness and durability over a third camera. The dual 48MP setup would still allow for 2x “optical-quality” cropping, but true zoom fans might need to wait for the second generation.
What’s more interesting is what’s missing: no clear cutout for Face ID. This suggests Apple might rely on a side-mounted Touch ID sensor (built into the power button) or, more likely, an under-display fingerprint reader – a first for any iPhone.
First Look: The Punch-Hole Selfie Camera in an… Awkward Spot?
For the first time, we have a precise location for the selfie camera on the inner folding display. And it’s weird.
The leaked drawings place a single punch-hole camera in the top-left corner of the unfolded screen.
Why is that odd? Because when you unfold the device and hold it like a mini iPad in portrait orientation, the physical volume buttons (which sit on the top-right edge when the phone is folded) end up in the bottom-right corner of your hand. That means you’ll either adjust your grip or flip the device 180 degrees – which would then put the selfie camera at the bottom-left.
It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s the kind of quirky design compromise you rarely see from Apple. On Android foldables, punch-holes are usually centered along the right edge or hidden under the display. This left-corner placement feels… intentional, perhaps to leave the rest of the screen completely unobstructed for media consumption.
Dummy Units Reveal Scale: Next to iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPad Mini
The leak doesn’t stop at drawings. Hands-on videos of dummy units (presumably based on the same case-maker tooling) have surfaced alongside real-world comparisons. One widely shared image from the YouTube channel MaxTech shows the iPhone Fold dummy sitting between an iPhone 17 Pro Max and an iPad mini.
The verdict? It’s unmistakably a “phone that unfolds into a small tablet” – roughly the size of the current iPad mini when open, but significantly thinner. When closed, it’s barely wider than the Pro Max but noticeably taller.
For anyone worried the iPhone Fold would feel like two iPhones glued together, these dummy units suggest a surprisingly refined, pocketable shape.
Only Two Colors – And They’re Predictable
If you were hoping for a Product(RED) foldable or a deep purple, lower your expectations. The schematics and accompanying notes indicate Apple will launch the Ultra/Fold in just two classic finishes:
- Black (likely a dark space-gray or matte obsidian)
- White (possibly a ceramic white or silver)
This echoes early rumors that Apple is treating the first foldable as a “pro” statement device, not a fashion piece. Remember, the original Apple Watch Edition launched in just one color, too. It’s possible more hues arrive with the second generation.
September 2026 Launch? And What About the Rest of the iPhone Lineup?
The most credible rumors now point to a September 2026 unveiling for the iPhone Fold / Ultra. That would put it on stage alongside two other heavy hitters:
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
According to the same supply-chain chatter, Apple is not planning any “affordable” iPhone models this year. Instead, the iPhone 18, iPhone Air (2nd generation), and iPhone 18e are reportedly being prepped for a spring 2027 release. That means the foldable will be the undisputed star of Apple’s fall 2026 event – and likely priced like one.
Analysts expect a starting price between $2,299 and $2,499, making it the most expensive iPhone ever sold.
A Healthy Dose of Skepticism (You Knew This Was Coming)
Let’s be real: This is still a leak. And a leak that originates from a case manufacturer, no less. While case-makers often receive early CAD files to produce accessories, those files aren’t always final. Apple has been known to seed fake dimensions to smoke out leakers.
Moreover, the lack of Face ID and the oddly placed selfie camera raise eyebrows. Would Apple really abandon its flagship biometric system on a $2,500 device? Possibly, if it couldn’t make it work under the folding display. But it would be a surprising step backward.
Still, the consistency across multiple sources – from the dummy unit videos to the yeux1122 schematics – gives this leak more weight than most.
The foldable iPhone is shaping up to be the most anticipated phone of the year. Expect rumors to pile up – and probably contradict each other – between now and September.
Final Take: What We Think We Know
To summarize the leaked schematics (take with a pinch of salt):
| Feature | Leaked Spec |
|---|---|
| Folded thickness | 9.2 mm |
| Unfolded thickness | 4.7 mm |
| Max thickness (w/ camera bump) | 13.7 mm |
| Inner display selfie camera | Punch-hole, top-left corner |
| Face ID | Not present (likely Touch ID or under-display) |
| Rear cameras | Dual 48MP (wide + ultra-wide) |
| Colors | Black, White |
| Announcement | September 2026 |
| Price (rumored) | $2,299 – $2,499 |
If even half of this turns out to be true, Apple’s first foldable won’t just compete with Samsung and Google – it could redefine what a “foldable thickness” should be. The 9.2mm profile is genuinely impressive for a device with an IP-rated hinge and Apple’s typical build quality.
Now we wait to see if the real thing lives up to the drawings.
What do you think – is a 9.2mm foldable worth $2,500? Or does the missing telephoto camera kill the deal? Drop your thoughts below (or, you know, yell at the rumor mill on Twitter).
