| NoxTi is designed to light up for years without ever needing to be recharged. |
Forget fumbling for a flashlight in the dark. A new everyday carry (EDC) gadget called NoxTi promises a soft, constant glow for over two decades without a single battery change. And right now, it’s seeking crowdfunding.
At first glance, the NoxTi looks almost too simple: a sleek titanium cylinder, just 45 millimetres long and weighing a mere 10.8 grams. You can wear it as a necklace or clip it onto a key ring. A small, pill-shaped viewing window emits a gentle light – but don’t expect it to replace a tactical flashlight. It’s not nearly as bright as a Nitecore Tini 3 ($39 on Amazon), which blasts out 500 lumens. Instead, the NoxTi offers something entirely different: a dependable, always-on glow that never needs charging.
No Batteries, No Bulbs – Just Tritium
So how does a tiny metal tube light up without any visible power source? The secret lies inside: phosphorescent tritium. Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that emits low-energy beta radiation, which excites a phosphor layer to produce a continuous glow. The result is a light that never needs to be switched on or recharged.
With a half-life of 12.3 years, the NoxTi’s brightness fades very slowly. After twelve years, it will still shine half as brightly as on day one. And even after 25 years, the material retains a quarter of its original glow. That’s longer than most people keep a set of keys.
When the tritium core eventually reaches the end of its lifespan – or if you simply fancy a change of colour – the core can be replaced. Users can choose from green, yellow, blue, violet, turquoise or red cores, allowing for personalisation or even colour-coded key organisation.
Built to Last Through Real Life
The titanium housing isn’t just for looks. It protects the fragile tritium core against water splashes, accidental drops, and temperatures ranging from -20 °C to +50 °C. That means it can survive a winter key toss into a snowbank or a hot summer day on a dashboard – though it’s not meant for deep diving or extreme environments.
Pricing, Availability, and the Crowdfunding Catch
NoxTi is currently being funded on Kickstarter. In the “Super Early Bird” offer, the key fob version costs the equivalent of $24.50, while the planned retail price will rise to $34.30 once the campaign ends. The manufacturer offers free worldwide shipping, but be warned: the price does not include import sales tax or customs duties, so backers outside the manufacturer’s home country may need to pay extra upon delivery.
This is the second crowdfunding project from Xedge, the company behind NoxTi. Their first product was an EDC tool that, according to Kickstarter comments, was delivered on time – a positive sign. However, some customers complained about quality issues. As with any crowdfunding campaign, defects or delays can never be completely ruled out. Only time will tell whether NoxTi actually glows as long and as reliably as advertised.
Final Verdict: A Unique Glow for Niche EDC Fans
The NoxTi is not a flashlight. It won’t help you find your way on a dark trail or light up a room. But for those who appreciate minimalist EDC gear, a subtle nightlight on their keychain, or a conversation piece that literally glows for decades, it’s a fascinating option. Just go in with realistic expectations – and maybe a backup battery light from Amazon.
