The Oppo Pad Mini adopts an unusual form factor for a compact tablet.

The battle for the best small-screen tablet just got fierce. Xiaomi kicked things off with two new compact slates in China today, and Oppo has quickly fired back with an impressive alternative of its own.

If you’ve been waiting for a true iPad mini rival that doesn’t compromise on raw power, Oppo might have just delivered the answer. But first, let’s rewind. Earlier today, Xiaomi unveiled not one but two compact tablets: the Redmi Pad 2 SE, followed swiftly by the Redmi K Pad 2. While Xiaomi’s focus seemed to be on budget-to-midrange versatility, Oppo clearly had something else in mind – a pocket-sized powerhouse designed to go toe-to-toe with the best.

Enter the Oppo Pad Mini.

Oppo Pad Mini: Small Screen, Massive Specs

Oppo’s new compact tablet is anything but “mini” when it comes to performance. At its heart lies Qualcomm’s latest and greatest – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve already seen it shine inside the OnePlus 15R (currently $699 on Amazon). But what exactly makes this silicon so special?

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 packs an Adreno 829 GPU alongside a unique CPU setup: dual Oryon Gen 3 Prime cores and six Oryon Gen 3 Performance cores. This hybrid architecture promises both blazing single-core speed for app launches and sustained multi-core grunt for gaming or multitasking. Oppo pairs this chip with LPDDR5X-4800 RAM and UFS 4.1 flash storage – a combination that should make everything from loading large PDFs to editing 4K video feel instantaneous.

Display and Design: Almost Bezelless Beauty

The Oppo Pad Mini features an 8.8-inch AMOLED display that runs at a sharp 2,520 x 1,680 pixel resolution in a 3:2 aspect ratio. Why 3:2? It’s a favourite among productivity fans because it gives you more vertical space for reading documents, browsing websites, or sketching.

According to Oppo, the screen is surrounded by an astonishingly thin 2.99 mm bezel on all four sides – that’s practically uniform and makes the tablet feel more like a futuristic glass slate. The display supports a 60-144 Hz adaptive refresh rate, so it can dial down to save battery while reading static content or ramp up to a buttery 144 Hz for scrolling through social media or playing supported games.

For selfies and video calls, there’s an 8 MP front-facing camera embedded right into that display. Around the back, a 13 MP rear camera handles document scanning and casual photography. Not exactly pro-grade, but more than adequate for a tablet this size.

Battery and Charging: All-Day Stamina

One of the biggest challenges for compact tablets is fitting a decent battery inside a small chassis. Oppo seems to have cracked the code. The Pad Mini houses a massive 8,000 mAh battery – that’s on par with many full-sized 11-inch tablets. Combined with the power-efficient AMOLED panel and adaptive refresh rate, you’re looking at easy all-day use.

When it’s time to top up, 67 W wired charging via the USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port gets you from zero to full in a hurry. Oppo doesn’t quote exact times yet, but based on similar devices, expect a 50% charge in under 20 minutes. The USB-C port also supports fast data transfers thanks to USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds (up to 5 Gbps), which is great for moving large video files or photo albums.

Pricing, Colors, and Optional Matte Display

Oppo will offer the Pad Mini in three stylish finishes: Space GreyMonet Purple, and Peppermint Green. The entry-level configuration starts at CNY 3,699 (approximately $545) and gives you 8 GB of RAM with 256 GB of storage – already a generous baseline. If you need more memory, the Space Grey model is also available with 12 GB of RAM and either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage.

For those who hate glare or plan to use the tablet outdoors, Oppo offers optional matte display variants. These special editions reduce reflections and feel more like paper when using a stylus. However, they push the price up to CNY 4,999 (roughly $735) for the top-tier model.

How Does It Compare to the iPad Mini?

Oppo is clearly positioning the Pad Mini as an iPad mini alternative – the company even released a side-by-side comparison image (shown above) highlighting the advantages of its own tablet. While Apple’s iPad mini (6th gen) runs the A15 Bionic, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 in Oppo’s slate likely offers superior multi-core performance and GPU power. The 144 Hz AMOLED display also outclasses the iPad mini’s 60 Hz LCD, especially for media consumption.

That said, Apple still holds the edge in software ecosystem and app optimisation for tablets. Oppo’s ColorOS for tablets has improved dramatically, but iPadOS remains the gold standard for creative and productivity workflows.

Global Availability: A Waiting Game

Here’s the disappointing part for fans outside China: Oppo has not yet revealed whether the Pad Mini will be available globally. The company’s press materials focus exclusively on the Chinese home market, where the tablet will launch first. Historically, Oppo has brought select tablet models to India, Europe, and other regions, but the Pad Mini might remain a China-exclusive – at least for now.

Given the strong reception of compact tablets like the Lenovo Y700 and iPad mini, there’s definitely demand worldwide. We’ll be watching for any announcements regarding international variants.

Xiaomi’s Response: Redmi Pad 2 SE and Redmi K Pad 2

For context, Xiaomi didn’t just sit idle. The company’s Redmi Pad 2 SE and Redmi K Pad 2 launched earlier the same day, aiming at different price points. The Redmi Pad 2 SE is expected to be a budget-friendly media consumption device, while the Redmi K Pad 2 targets performance-focused users with a slightly larger screen. However, neither matches the Oppo Pad Mini’s premium chipset or AMOLED display – suggesting Xiaomi is leaving the ultra-compact flagship space open for now.

Final Thoughts: A New Champion of Small Tablets?

The Oppo Pad Mini ticks almost every box for a high-end compact tablet: a cutting-edge Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, a gorgeous 144 Hz AMOLED screen, long battery life, and fast charging. The starting price of ~$545 is competitive – especially considering the 8/256 GB base model. Even the matte display variant at $735 is cheaper than a cellular iPad mini with similar storage.

Will Oppo convince enough users to switch from Apple or Samsung? That depends entirely on software updates and global availability. But as a piece of hardware, the Pad Mini is easily one of the most impressive compact tablets we’ve seen in years.

Stay tuned for our full review once a global unit becomes available. In the meantime, let us know in the comments – would you pick the Oppo Pad Mini over an iPad mini?
