Asus ROG Xreal R1 AR Glasses Set for Pre-Order: 240Hz Micro-OLED Display, 171-Inch Virtual Screen, and More

The ROG Xreal R1 is a pair of AR glasses that work with handhelds, PCs, and consoles.

Back at CES earlier this year, Asus turned heads when it unveiled a surprise collaboration with augmented reality specialist Xreal. The result? A pair of gaming-focused AR glasses called the ROG Xreal R1. Now, after months of waiting, we finally have a pre-order date and a clearer picture of what these specs-heavy wearables are bringing to the table.

According to a recent post on X by Xreal, the ROG Xreal R1 will launch in Europe and North America, with pre-orders kicking off on May 17. That’s right around the corner. Unfortunately, Xreal is still keeping the price under wraps. It’s also unclear whether the glasses will ship with the sleek ROG Control Dock (shown off in teaser images) or if that accessory will be sold separately.

Still, what we do know is enough to get any portable gamer or AR enthusiast excited. Let’s break down the specs, the competition, and what this means for the likes of Lenovo’s Legion Glasses.

240Hz Refresh Rate and Blazing-Fast Response Time

The ROG Xreal R1 isn’t messing around when it comes to display performance. The glasses feature dual Micro-OLED displays with a buttery-smooth 240Hz refresh rate and an astonishing 0.01ms response time. For comparison, most gaming monitors top out at 144Hz or 240Hz, but having that in a pair of lightweight AR glasses is a different ballgame. Whether you’re streaming fast-paced shooters or racing games from your ROG Ally, those extra frames should translate to noticeably less motion blur and input lag.

Xreal also confirmed that the glasses can project a virtual screen up to 171 inches – think IMAX from your sofa. The 57° field of view is respectable for AR glasses, though not the widest on the market. But where the R1 shines is in its native 3DoF (three degrees of freedom) head tracking and Auto Transparency mode. That means the virtual screen stays pinned in place as you move your head, and you can quickly peek at the real world without taking the glasses off.

Missing Specs: Brightness, Weight, and Dimensions

Before you get too hyped, there are still a few unknowns. Asus and Xreal haven’t yet revealed the peak brightness (critical for outdoor use), nor the weight and physical dimensions of the R1. Given the ROG branding, we’re hoping for a lightweight design with enough nits to handle well-lit rooms. We’ll have to wait for the official spec sheet closer to release.

Compatibility: ROG Ally, PC, and Consoles

As you’d expect from a collaboration between Asus and Xreal, the R1 plays nicely with Asus’s own handheld gaming lineup – particularly the ROG Ally series. But compatibility extends to PCs, consoles (PS5, Xbox), and any device with a USB-C video output that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. The included (or optional) ROG Control Dock likely simplifies connectivity and adds extra ports, though we’re still waiting on confirmation.

Taking on Lenovo’s Legion Glasses Gen 2

Let’s talk competition. Lenovo’s Legion Glasses Gen 2 are currently the benchmark for gaming-focused AR eyewear, priced at $249.99 on Amazon. They offer a 120Hz refresh rate and a 126-inch virtual screen. The ROG Xreal R1 blows past that with double the refresh rate (240Hz) and a much larger 171-inch display. That kind of performance doesn’t come cheap. It’s almost certain that the R1 will cost more than Lenovo’s offering.

If you’re looking for a solid alternative right now, the Legion Glasses Gen 2 are widely available and compatible with the Legion Go, Steam Deck, and other USB-C devices. In fact, you can check them out on Amazon here. But if you can wait until summer, the ROG Xreal R1 might just be worth the premium.

Pre-Order Details and Final Thoughts

Mark your calendars: May 17 is the day pre-orders open for the ROG Xreal R1 in Europe and North America. No price yet, but expect an official announcement in the coming days via Xreal’s website or Asus’s ROG channels. The glasses are slated for a summer 2026 release – just in time for long travel days and late-night gaming sessions.

Is the R1 going to dethrone Lenovo? Possibly. The higher refresh rate and larger virtual screen are compelling, but price, comfort, and brightness will be the real deciding factors. For now, Asus and Xreal have successfully raised the bar for what we expect from handheld AR gaming.

Stay tuned for updates on brightness, weight, and official pricing as we approach the pre-order date. And if you simply can’t wait, those Lenovo Legion Glasses are still a fantastic buy at $249.99.
