PocketBook Era Lite Launches With Sharper Screen, But Drops Full Waterproofing – Here’s What You Need to Know

PocketBook's latest e-reader offers a frontlit display at an affordable price.

E-reader fans have a new option to consider, but it comes with a few trade-offs. PocketBook has quietly expanded its popular Era lineup with the PocketBook Era Lite – a device that looks nearly identical to its predecessor but swaps some premium features for a noticeable screen upgrade. Let’s break down what’s changed, whether it matters, and who this new model is really for.

What’s different? Two big changes (and one compromise)

At first glance, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the Era Lite apart from the original PocketBook Era. The same ergonomic, award-winning design with those distinctive side buttons is here, and the 7-inch form factor remains intact. But under the hood – and on the spec sheet – two major shifts stand out.

First, the waterproofing has been dialed back. The original Era boasts an IPX8 rating, meaning it can survive submersion in freshwater (up to 2 meters for 60 minutes). The new Era Lite carries an IPX4 certification instead – that’s splash-resistant only. Think light rain, accidental spills, or a damp bathroom counter. Dropping it in a pool or bath? Not recommended anymore.

Second, and more exciting: the display technology got a genuine upgrade. PocketBook equipped the Era Lite with a newer E Ink Carta 1300 panel. The company claims this delivers:

  • 20% higher contrast than previous generations
  • 25% faster response time – noticeable when navigating menus or turning pages

Resolution stays at the gold-standard 300 PPI (1264×1680 pixels), and like all E Ink screens, it remains perfectly readable under direct sunlight. The display still shows 16 shades of gray – no color here – but the improved contrast makes text pop with deeper blacks and whiter whites.

SmartLight, audio, and daily usability

PocketBook kept the integrated SmartLight feature, which lets you adjust both brightness and color temperature. The system can automatically shift from cool daylight tones to warmer, sleep-friendly hues as the evening progresses. It’s a thoughtful touch for bedtime readers.

Battery life? PocketBook didn’t provide an official estimate, but the combination of a 1,700 mAh battery and E Ink’s famously low power draw should easily get you through several days or even weeks of regular reading, depending on backlight usage and wireless activity.

The internals package is modest but functional: an Allwinner B288 ARM chip1 GB of RAM16 GB of storage, and a Linux-based OS. That operating system supports over 20 ebook formats (including EPUB, PDF, MOBI, and FB2) and handles audiobooks via Bluetooth. You can also use the built-in Text-to-Speech feature, which reads text aloud in multiple languages – handy for multitasking.

Wireless transfers happen over Wi-Fi 4 (2.4 GHz). You won’t get 5 GHz speeds, but for syncing ebooks, it’s perfectly adequate. The device weighs 204 grams – roughly the same as an average smartphone – making it comfortable for one-handed reading.

Software extras: Libraries and DRM support

One area where PocketBook consistently shines is its open, library-friendly approach. The Era Lite comes with pre-installed Onleihe and Libby apps, giving direct access to public library collections (a huge win for European users especially). The device also supports both Adobe DRM and LCP DRM, so borrowed or purchased books from most major stores will work without conversion headaches.

With support for 25 formats out of the box, you’re unlikely to encounter a file it can’t read.

Pricing and availability – Europe gets it first

The PocketBook Era Lite is available now in Europe, retailing for €199 (MSRP). The initial color option is called Stone Green. You can find it at independent bookstores, the official PocketBook webshop, and electronics retailers.

US pricing and a release date have not been confirmed yet. For context, the older, fully waterproof PocketBook Era is currently going for $249 on Amazon in the States.

PocketBook will also be showcasing the Era Lite at BiblioCon in Berlin (May 19–22, 2026) – so if you’re attending, you can try it hands-on at stand F05 in Convention Hall 2.

Who should buy the Era Lite?

Let’s be practical.

Buy the Era Lite if:

  • You want a sharper, more responsive screen than most 7-inch readers offer
  • You rarely read near water (no beach baths, no poolside soaking)
