Elden Ring Tarnished Edition on Switch 2: Performance Gains or Overpriced Gamble?

The August 28th Elden Ring Tarnished Edition release date is fast approaching, and the pressure is on for FromSoftware developers to deliver a polished portable experience. After an initial delay to iron out performance kinks, fresh gameplay footage suggests the Switch 2 version is finally finding its footing—though whether borderline 30 fps graphics will justify the premium price tag remains a heated debate among fans.

A Slow but Steady Improvement Process

Japanese gaming outlet Famitsu recently offered one of the first in-depth looks at the port, and their detailed preview paints a cautiously optimistic picture. While the magazine reminds readers that the build isn't final, new YouTube footage provides our best glimpse yet at both docked and handheld performance.

When connected to a TV, the Elden Ring Switch 2 port appears to target a stable 30 fps, occasionally pushing higher in less demanding areas. Unlike earlier, rougher builds, there's no apparent stuttering when traversing the open world—a significant victory given the game's sprawling scope. Combat also feels responsive, though purists will notice the absence of the 60 fps performance mode available on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Handheld Mode: The Real Test

Portable performance has always been the bigger concern, given the Switch 2's throttled GPU and CPU in handheld mode. Encouragingly, the Famitsu tester reported being able to "play smoothly without any particular discomfort." In the clips circulating online, the graphics largely maintain the same targets as when docked—no small feat for a game this visually dense.

However, not all footage tells the same story. Other recent recordings expose noticeable frame rate drops during intense boss encounters, raising questions about consistency. For a game where split-second dodges mean the difference between victory and another "YOU DIED" screen, those dips could prove frustrating.

A Port That Demands Compromise

Whether gamers embrace the Elden Ring Tarnished Edition may ultimately come down to expectations. It's worth remembering that even on PS5 and Series X, FromSoftware's masterpiece struggles to hold a locked 60 fps. A more apt comparison might be the Steam Deck, where after numerous updates, the game now comfortably hits 30 fps at 1280×800 with reasonable detail settings—a template the Switch 2 port seems to be following closely.

The Price Problem

For wavering Switch 2 owners, cost presents another significant hurdle. The action RPG commands a steep $79.99, and its Game-Key Card format requires a substantial download—not ideal for those with limited storage or data caps.

Adding to the calculus, the Tarnished Pack—which includes two new starting classes, armor sets, and weapons—will arrive on other platforms for $4.99. It's a relatively modest ask for dedicated fans, though some may resent paying extra for content that feels like it could have been included.

The Verdict

With the Elden Ring Switch 2 release date just days away, the industry is about to discover whether these performance gains are enough to convince skeptics. The port shows genuine promise, and the fact that FromSoftware and their partners have clearly invested in optimization is encouraging.

But for a game that's already available on more powerful hardware—often at a lower price—the Switch 2 version needs to offer more than just "it runs okay." It needs to prove that the convenience of portable play is worth the visual compromises and the premium cost.

If the final build can maintain that 30 fps target with minimal drops, especially in handheld mode, then Elden Ring Tarnished Edition might just earn its place alongside the console's best releases. If not, it could become a cautionary tale about chasing technical ambition on limited hardware.

One thing's certain: come August 28th, we'll finally have our answer.
