GTA 6’s Leonida Looks Greener, Wilder, and More Alive in New Game Informer Screenshots

Twelve new screenshots show the wilder side of GTA 6, with storms, wildlife and far more nature than previously seen.

Game Informer has pulled back the curtain on Grand Theft Auto VI again, and this time the spotlight is firmly on Leonida’s natural side. As part of its September 29 cover story, “Grand Theft Auto VI – Welcome to Leonida,” the outlet released twelve new GTA 6 screenshots. They show a state that feels far more varied than the neon-soaked streets fans might expect—coastlines, untamed wilderness, wildlife, aircraft cutting through the sky, and storm clouds that look ready to swallow the horizon.

There is a catch, though. Only subscribers can access the full cover story. A digital subscription runs about $90 per year, while the bundle that includes the print magazine costs around $140 annually. Even so, the handful of images and details that have made their way online are enough to keep the GTA 6 hype train rolling.

For the cover story, Game Informer spoke directly with Rockstar Games and came away with a pile of new information about the game world, its gameplay systems, and the technology powering it all. The reaction on Reddit has been almost giddy, with fans poring over every scrap of new info. In the r/GTA6 discussion thread, many players say Leonida’s sprawling landscapes remind them of Red Dead Redemption 2. That comparison has sparked a bigger hope: that GTA 6 will not just be a bigger, prettier GTA 5, but a game that blends the series’ classic sandbox freedom with the dense, immersive detail Rockstar perfected in RDR2.

Not everyone is thrilled with the screenshots themselves. Some fans have pointed out that the images are low-resolution and heavily compressed, which makes it harder to judge finer details. Still, the excitement has barely dipped. Four of the twelve new images are already circulating on Reddit, and they are doing plenty to fuel speculation.

Dynamic Weather Could Be a Game-Changer

One of the most talked-about revelations is GTA 6’s revamped weather system. According to Game Informer, Leonida will feature localized, dynamic weather. That means one part of the map could be bathed in sunshine while a violent storm rages just a few miles away. Tropical storms and hurricanes have also been confirmed, and wind will visibly affect vegetation, water, hair, and loose objects in the environment.

Reddit users are already dreaming up ways to test those systems. Some want to fly straight into a hurricane. Others are curious about how lightning and severe weather will change the behavior of NPCs, vehicles, and the world at large. If Rockstar can pull it off, Leonida could feel less like a static map and more like a living, breathing place.

More Than 170 Animal Species

Leonida’s wildlife is getting just as much attention. The state is said to be home to more than 170 animal species, including over 60 bird species and more than 30 land mammals. Confirmed wildlife includes alligators, flamingos, sharks, whales, rays, and even rhesus macaques. Some species are expected to be especially rare, which has naturally invited more comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2’s ecosystem.

For a GTA game, that level of biodiversity is a major shift. It suggests Rockstar wants players to look up, look down, and pay attention to the world around them—not just the next heist or getaway. GTA 6 is also available for pre-order on Amazon for those ready to commit early.

Between the weather, the wildlife, and the sheer scope of Leonida, the new cover story has given fans plenty to debate. The full Game Informer feature remains behind a paywall, but the snippets that have surfaced already point to a GTA 6 that aims to be wilder, more dynamic, and more immersive than anything Rockstar has built before.
