| 2027 Seagull at BYD's T-shaped megawatt charger |
The world’s biggest EV maker just made ultra-fast charging affordable. The second-generation BYD Seagull launches in China with a starting price of just $9,800 and a 5-minute charge that could change the game for city cars.
BYD has officially unveiled the 2027 Seagull (known as the Dolphin Mini or Atto 1 in global markets), and it is a massive step up from its predecessor. The headline? BYD’s “Flash Charging” technology is finally trickling down to the brand’s most affordable model, allowing the hatchback to charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes on select trims.
This announcement comes straight from the official launch event, where BYD outlined its aggressive strategy to reclaim market share in the entry-level EV segment.
The Headline Numbers: Price and Performance
The 2027 Seagull is cheaper and bigger than the car it replaces. The entry-level "Vitality Edition" starts at just **65,900 yuan ($9,800)**, which is $700 less than the previous year's model.
While the base model is a budget-friendly commuter, the real technological leap is in the upper trims. The top three trim levels—starting with the "Ease Edition" (approx. $11,300)—feature BYD's Blade Battery 2.0 (LFP chemistry) with Flash Charging capabilities. According to BYD, these models can utilize their 1.5 MW T-shaped charging piles to top up in minutes, a staggering figure for a vehicle in this price bracket.

Bigger, Smarter, and Safer
The Seagull has grown up. It is now 4,205 mm long with a 2,650 mm wheelbase, making it 425 mm longer than the outgoing model. This size bump finally allows for a five-person seating configuration, moving the Seagull closer to the size of the standard BYD Dolphin.
Inside, the budget nature of the car is hidden behind impressive tech. The cabin features a 15.6-inch rotating display running the DiLink 150 system with full-version DeepSeek AI integration. Drivers also get ventilated and heated front seats, a 50W wireless charger, and an 8-speaker audio system.
Safety and autonomy have also been prioritized. The top-tier "Smart Edition" ($14,900) comes equipped with the DiPilot 300 “God’s Eye” system, which utilizes LiDAR to enable City Navigation on Autopilot (CNOA) and high-speed driving assistance.
The Market Battle
Why the aggressive update? BYD is responding to a brutal market reality. Seagull sales in China dropped 66% in the first nine months of 2026, largely due to fierce competition from the Geely EX2 (Xingyuan), which has become China's best-selling car.
With the 2027 Seagull, BYD is fighting back with a combo of aggressive pricing, class-leading charging speeds, and advanced ADAS. The new model is available in five trims:
- Vitality Edition: $9,800
- Freedom Edition: $10,900
- Ease Edition: $11,300
- Flight Edition: $12,400
- Smart Edition: $14,900

Availability
The new Seagull is launching first in China, with global exports expected to follow under names like the Dolphin Mini and Atto 1. Whether the Flash Charging infrastructure will be ready for a 5-minute top-up in markets outside China remains to be seen, but the technology is no longer a luxury exclusive—it’s now a feature for the masses.
