Ember Lab has some disappointing news for fans eagerly awaiting their next adventure. The studio has officially pushed back Kena: Scars of Kosmora from its original 2026 window to 2027 on both PlayStation 5 and PC.
The announcement came through a PlayStation Blog post penned by COO Josh Grier and game writer Thomas Varga. In their message, the developers explained that the sequel simply needs more time in the oven to reach the level of polish they're aiming for. Unfortunately, no specific release date within 2027 has been shared just yet.
Why Ember Lab Decided to Delay the Game
According to Grier and Varga, the team is determined to surpass the quality of 2021's Kena: Bridge of Spirits – but on a much grander scale. While Scars of Kosmora follows in the footsteps of its predecessor as a character-driven, linear adventure, the studio emphasizes that this new chapter is significantly broader and deeper. Players who enjoy exploring beyond the main story path will find plenty of additional content waiting for them.
This ambition apparently requires extra development time, which led to the difficult decision to postpone the launch.
A New Chapter for Kena on the Island of Kosmora
The story picks up with Kena returning as a seasoned Spirit Guide – someone who balances the roles of warrior and spiritual healer. While she has experience helping spirits of the deceased find peace, she has never truly explored what it means to guide the living. That's where her childhood friend Orfio comes in.
Orfio believes the mysterious island of Kosmora holds answers that could benefit them both. Motivated by this possibility, Kena sets off to reunite with him and uncover secrets about her own past – and perhaps her future as well.
The Ancient Spirit Guides and Kosmora's History
The island's original Spirit Guides developed their practices around four elements and what are known as Alchemystic Temples. Long ago, four interconnected civilizations flourished on Kosmora, each sustained by a guiding element. However, a catastrophic event destroyed one of these cultures, leaving a lasting mark on the island's history.
Several living cultures still remain on Kosmora, and the elements continue to influence their daily lives and traditions. This rich worldbuilding suggests players will encounter diverse societies with unique customs and beliefs.
Temples, Companions, and Mounts
Ember Lab has described the Alchemystic Temples as a cornerstone of the gameplay experience. These dungeon-like challenges will test players' abilities and reward them with powerful, transformative upgrades.
Traversing Kosmora's expanded world won't be a solo endeavor either. Kena will gain a crystalline canine companion – a creature tied both to the game's mechanics and the island's mysterious origins. This ancient spirit serves multiple purposes: it can act as a mount for faster travel, fight alongside Kena in both mounted and on-foot combat, and assist with solving Alchemystic puzzles.

Platforms and Availability
When Kena: Scars of Kosmora finally arrives in 2027, it will be available on PS5 in both physical and digital formats. PC players will be able to purchase a digital version through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
PlayStation Publishing has been confirmed as the official publisher. The game was first revealed during a State of Play presentation in February, where it was given a 2026 release window. Those interested can currently wishlist the title on the PlayStation Store and Steam.
While the delay is certainly disappointing for fans, Ember Lab's commitment to delivering a polished and ambitious sequel suggests the wait will be worthwhile. For the full statement from the developers, check out the official PlayStation Blog post.
