A new report claims Disney is actively shopping for a studio to revive the Battlefront franchise — and one of the names in the frame is a genuine surprise.

It's been nearly a decade since Star Wars Battlefront II launched in 2017, and fans have spent most of that time assuming a third entry would never happen. According to a new rumor, that assumption may be wrong. A report originating from Electronic Gaming Monthly suggests Disney is now seriously interested in a Star Wars Battlefront 3 and has begun scouting for a development studio to build it.

The claim comes from EGM's long-running "Quartermann" rumor column in issue 265, published on October 9. Gaming journalist Jeff Grubb picked up the thread during his Game Mess Mornings podcast on October 19, reading the relevant passage aloud at the 22:42 mark. Two Very Different Candidates

According to the report, two studios are being considered: EA DICE and Bungie.

DICE is the obvious choice. The Swedish studio developed both Star Wars Battlefront (2015) and Battlefront II (2017), and it already has deep familiarity with the Frostbite engine and the franchise's core combat formula. For most fans, DICE returning would be the natural outcome.

Bungie, on the other hand, is the twist. The Halo and Destiny developer has been owned by Sony since 2022 and has spent recent years focused entirely on its own franchises. Taking over an established EA-published series would be an unusual move — but not an impossible one, according to Grubb.

Why Bungie Might Actually Say Yes

Bungie's financial situation provides the context. Sony recently took substantial write-downs on the studio and announced extensive layoffs in June 2026. Against that backdrop, an established, blockbuster franchise like Star Wars could offer a lifeline and a fresh revenue stream.

Even so, Grubb himself leans toward DICE as the more likely candidate. Neither studio has made any firm commitment to developing the game, and EGM's report stops well short of confirming that Battlefront 3 is in active production.

Fans Are Excited — and Wary

Reaction across the Star Wars Battlefront community has been predictably mixed. The prospect of a third game is thrilling, but enthusiasm for the two potential developers is considerably more muted. Both Bungie and DICE have lost significant numbers of experienced staff in recent years, and many fans argue neither studio is the same outfit that produced its best-known work.

There is one notable bright spot for Bungie: the gunplay in the Destiny games is widely praised, and some players say a Battlefront title with similarly satisfying shooting mechanics would be a dream come true. You can read the full fan discussion over on the r/StarWarsBattlefront subreddit.

The Bottom Line

For now, this remains a rumor sourced from a single magazine column and amplified by a well-connected journalist — not an announcement. Disney has not commented, and neither DICE nor Bungie has confirmed involvement. But after years of silence, the fact that Star Wars Battlefront 3 is being discussed at all is enough to give fans something to hope for.

Whether that hope lands with the studio that built the originals or the wildcard owned by Sony, one thing is clear: the galaxy far, far away may not be done with Battlefront just yet.
