| Huawei phones have the official alternative to the Google Maps application |
Last August, we heard about Huawei's plan to develop an alternative Google Maps product. At that time, Huawei released a number of mapping tools for developers instead of a full navigation app. Then it was reported that Huawei and TomTom have worked together to create their Service Cover Navigation.
Now the long-awaited alternative to Google Maps has finally appeared on Huawei phones. It is not produced by Huawei or TomTom and is called Here WeGo. It can be used on Honor and Huawei phones in Huawei App Store.
WeGo is not a new app here. It has been around since 2013 and it's not just in the Huawei App Store. It is available on Google Play Store and has over 10 million installs.
The app must meet all basic user mapping requirements including: step-by-step navigation, direct transport updates, taxi reservations, public transportation information, route planning, etc.
The app is available in more than 1,300 cities, including New York, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Munich, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Toronto, Sydney and many other cities. Offline maps are available in over 1,300 cities in 100 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, etc.
WeGo app has been scanned here on Huawei P40 Pro in London, and it seems to be working perfectly, at least on first impression.
Due to the ongoing U.S. ban on companies, Honor and Huawei users finally have a good platform for replacing Google Maps, and Google does not offer many Google applications for Huawei phones.
The new Maps app may not be as effective as the Google version, but it can be launched at least before Google services are restored to Huawei phones. However, there is no indication that this will happen soon.
