Instagram fights fake accounts with identity verification

Instagram is forcing some account owners to verify their identities and is ramping up efforts to fight the fake accounts and bots.

Failure to provide the necessary identification documents may reduce the spread of their position.

In other cases, failure to follow identity checks can permanently disable fake accounts.

Instagram does not request this request from all accounts, but from accounts with unreal patterns of behavior.

The platform says: We want the content you see on Instagram to be original, from real people, and not from robots or other content trying to mislead you.

It's a Facebook owned platform, and when you see a pattern of potential inappropriate behavior, you'll ask people to verify the authenticity of the person behind the account.

Requiring the person behind the account to verify their information can help the platform better understand when fake accounts try to deceive their followers, hold them accountable, and protect the Instagram community.

Instagram uses various signals to determine if an account's authenticity is in doubt. From them:

These narratives may have engaged in coordinated and unoriginal behavior.
When most account subscribers are not in their country / region.
The account shows signs of automatic activity.

When Instagram detects signs of potential inappropriate activity, account holders will be asked to verify their identities.

The account holder's name does not have to be the same as the account name itself. Because it can cause problems for branded sites or things other than personal accounts.

Instead, Instagram is trying to verify an account with possible wrongful activity behind a real person. After the platform verifies the account holder's information, the account will function normally unless further investigation is required.

The privacy is protected as the identifier is stored securely and deleted within 30 days of verification. The company raised concerns about being able to disclose the identifier in the following way: “Aliases are always a problem. An important part of Instagram.”

The platform accepts a long list of different types of identifiers, including:
  • birth certificate.
  • Driving License.
  • passport.
  • marriage document.
  • Official name change file.
  • Personal or car insurance card.
  • Government ID for non-drivers.
  • Green card, residence permit or immigration papers.
  • Voter ID card.
  • Family certificate.
  • Visa.
  • Immigration registration card.
  • Tax Number.
Any type of ID must include the full name and photo or proof of the full name and age.
