Qualcomm relies on the leading smartphone segment

The flagship Android smartphones launching this fall will feature Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, boosting GPU performance by nearly 10% and adding an hour to battery life.

Qualcomm has also released the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, which borrows some key features from the Snapdragon 8 series.

The Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 appears in upcoming Q3 phones including OnePlus, Asus, Honor, Lenovo, Motorola, Oppo, Realme, Redmi, Vivo, Xiaomi, iQOO, Nubia, OnePlus, OSOM, RedMagic and ZTE. Honor, OPPO and Xiaomi will use the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 from the second quarter.

Mike Roberts, Vice President of Global Product Marketing at Qualcomm, said the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 was launched because it saw more consumers turn to flagship smartphones.

The flagship smartphones currently account for 31% of the market and this is expected to rise to 35% within five years.

But Qualcomm also expects 75% of total smartphone revenue to come from its flagship smartphone market, which sells for more than $500.

The company estimates that nearly half of the $200 billion gaming market comes from mobile games. It seems that slavery was enough for the company to allocate more money to improve its flagship smartphone.

Qualcomm launches new processors

Qualcomm's launch of the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor is no doubt, as the company has already released Snapdragon Plus versions for gaming phones, such as the Snapdragon 865 Plus announced in July 2020.

The Snapdragon 865 Plus uses an upgraded CPU and GPU to deliver higher performance, and Qualcomm is following the same strategy here.

The Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 increases the core frequency of the Cortex-X2 from 3.0 GHz to 3.2 GHz. This improves performance by 10%. The company also overclocked the GPU, making it 10% faster.

Qualcomm also increased CPU and GPU power efficiency by 30%, for an overall increase of 15%.

Roberts said the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 provides up to an additional 80 minutes of video streaming or an additional 25 minutes of 5G calls. Other than that, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 has the same features as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 is paired with the X62 5G modem, FastConnect 6900 wireless system, and Bluetooth. The company also continues to make the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Likewise, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 has an upgraded GPU capable of displaying up to 20% faster graphics. It also offers 30% more AI performance compared to the Snapdragon 778G processor.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is the first chipset in the Snapdragon 7 series to include what Qualcomm calls a triple image signal processor, or the ability to capture images from three different cameras simultaneously at a total resolution of 200 megapixels. The camera's image signal processor also supports deep learning facial recognition for better authentication.
