League of Legends source code pirates are up for sale

After game developer Riot Games confirmed that the League of Legends source code was stolen after its development environment was hacked, hackers put the code up for sale online.

Riot Games announced Friday that its development environment has been hacked, allowing hackers to steal source code for League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics, as well as the old Packman anti-cheat software.

Then, she confirmed that she had received a ransom note from the hackers and said that she would not pay any ransom. The ransom note was obtained from Vice.com, in which the hackers demanded $10 million to prevent the stolen data from being published.

Speaking to security research group VX-Underground, hackers revealed that they gained access to Riot Game's network after social engineering attacks on company employees via text messages.

The hackers claimed that they had access to the development network for 36 hours before the company's security operations center found them and confirmed that their goal was to steal the source code of Riot Vanguard's anti-cheat software.

This week, the hackers behind the attack put the source code of the game (League of Legends) and the old anti-cheat software (Packman) up for sale on a popular hacking forum.

According to the hacker, the source code for the League of Legends and Pekman games is worth at least $1 million. However, they told BleepingComputer that they were willing to sell the Packman separately for $500,000.

The forum post contains links to a thousand-page PDF document that they claim contains an index listing of 72.4GB of stolen source code. Experts reviewed the document and confirmed that the source code list belongs to Riot Games related software.

Although the hackers didn't share any additional evidence of the stolen source code, they did report to BleepingComputer that they shared the evidence with Ryscu, a YouTuber who makes League of Legends videos. The latter posted screenshots of the leaked source code in a video about the hack.

It is believed that the main problem with stolen source code is that it can be used to cheat or exploited to attack the game and its players. Other hackers can also use the source code to create exploits that allow remote code execution on players' computers.
