Apple is delaying development of its own Wi-Fi chip

A recent report by renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that Apple has indefinitely put the development of its Wi-Fi chip on hold as it focuses on other priorities.

In early January, a report by Bloomberg said that the US tech giant was working on new specialized chips that would perform some of the key communications functions in its devices.

According to Bloomberg, the company is developing its own chips to replace the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips currently used by Broadcom and plans to integrate the chips into its devices by 2025.

And now, Kuo reports that Apple's Wi-Fi chip development has hit a snag, prompting the company to "temporarily" shelve it. He attributed this to two factors that led to the decision: the upcoming transition to the next WiFi standard and the development of chips based on 3nm manufacturing technology.

Kuo mentioned that Apple is also facing the issue of implementing its own chipset. Since it only runs on a Wi-Fi chip and not a chip that combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — as is the case with Broadcom chips — the design can get more complicated with two separate chips in a device, especially if one company is setting up to change Wi-Fi standards. -Fi 6e) new.

Apple is not thought to be very successful in developing its own modems that provide Wi-Fi and 5G connectivity. The fifth-generation broadband chip was tested in the iPhone SE 4, but the project was later shelved.

It is expected that the iPhone will be the first product of the company to move to the standard (Wi-Fi 6E), and with the expected launch of the iPhone 15 in the fall of 2023, Apple is preparing to start developing its Wi-Fi Set chipset to continue relying on Broadcom.

(Ku) It is estimated that it will take years for Apple to develop its Wi-Fi chips seriously, as the company intends to move to 3-nanometer chips between 2023 and 2025, a transition that will consume a lot of the company's resources.
