London, 13 June 2025 – Chinese automotive giant BYD has fired a major salvo in the battle for affordable electric mobility in Britain, officially launching its cheapest model yet: the BYD Dolphin Surf. Priced aggressively from just £21,845 (including the UK Plug-in Car Grant), the Dolphin Surf undercuts its main rivals and aims to bring zero-emission driving within reach of significantly more buyers.
Unveiled at BYD's flagship London showroom this morning, the Dolphin Surf arrives as a compact five-door hatchback, designed explicitly for urban commuting and everyday driving. It slots neatly beneath the popular BYD Atto 3 and Dolphin models already available, targeting a segment hungry for genuinely accessible EVs.
Key Selling Points: Price and Practicality
The headline is undoubtedly the price. Starting under £22,000, the Dolphin Surf significantly undercuts competitors like the MG4 (from approx. £26,000), the Renault Zoe (from approx. £30,000), and even basic versions of stalwarts like the Nissan Leaf. Crucially, it positions itself far below the entry point of Tesla's Model 3.
"But it's not just about being cheap," stressed BYD UK's Managing Director, Michael Shu, during the launch. "The Dolphin Surf delivers the core benefits drivers need: sufficient range for daily use, modern technology, BYD's renowned Blade Battery safety, and a practical, stylish package. We believe this is the car that will truly democratise EV ownership for many British families and first-time buyers."
Under the Hood (or rather, the Floor)
The entry-level Dolphin Surf "Active" trim features a 70 kWh BYD Blade LFP battery paired with a single electric motor delivering 94 bhp. BYD claims a WLTP range of 210 miles on a single charge – a figure squarely aimed at alleviating range anxiety for typical commutes and local journeys. Charging speeds support up to 88kW DC, enabling a 10-80% top-up in approximately 35 minutes.
Standard equipment includes a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic air conditioning, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and a suite of basic driver assistance features.
For those wanting a bit more pep or range, a higher-spec "Comfort" trim offers 100 bhp and boosts the range to 250 miles (WLTP), starting from £23,495. Explore the full specs and design details directly on BYD's UK site
Market Impact and the Tesla Shadow
The launch intensifies the already fierce competition in the budget EV sector. BYD, backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and now a global leader in EV sales volume, is leveraging its vertical integration (making its own batteries, chips, and motors) to achieve aggressive pricing. Industry analysts see the Dolphin Surf as a direct challenge to MG's stronghold in the value segment and a major step in converting petrol/diesel hatchback buyers.
"The £20,000-£25,000 bracket has been a crucial gap in the EV market," commented automotive analyst Rebecca Jones. "BYD hitting this price point with a 200+ mile range car is a game-changer. It puts enormous pressure on European and Korean manufacturers to accelerate their own affordable EV programs. Tesla, while dominant in the premium space, doesn't currently play in this arena, leaving it wide open for BYD and MG."
As reported by The Guardian, the Dolphin Surf's arrival also coincides with increased government pressure to improve EV infrastructure and affordability to meet net-zero targets.
Availability
First customer deliveries of the BYD Dolphin Surf are expected to begin across the UK in late September 2025. Orders are opening immediately through BYD's growing network of dealerships and its online configurator. With its compelling mix of price, practicality, and BYD's rising reputation, the Dolphin Surf is poised to make serious waves in the UK's electric car market.
