Google Labs Unveils Doppl: Virtual Try-Ons Revolutionize Online Shopping

SAN FRANCISCO—Google Labs has launched Doppl, an AI-powered app allowing users to "try on" clothing virtually using augmented reality (AR). The tool, now in beta, aims to curb the fashion industry’s $7 billion annual return problem by letting shoppers visualize garments on their own bodies before purchasing.

Using smartphone cameras, Doppl scans the user’s physique and maps selected apparel onto their silhouette in real time. The app leverages machine learning to simulate fabric drape, texture, and fit—accounting for movement and lighting. Retail partners like Gap, Zara, and Reformation are already integrating the tech into their apps. "It’s like having a fitting room in your pocket," said Google’s project lead, Elena Torres. Early tests show a 30% reduction in returns among beta users.

Privacy advocates have praised Doppl’s on-device processing, which avoids uploading body scans to the cloud. However, the rollout coincides with growing scrutiny over wearable tech security. Researchers recently exposed critical vulnerabilities in Airoha Bluetooth chipsets—used in millions of fitness trackers and smartwatches—that could enable data interception. Read the full security analysis here.

Why It Matters:
With e-commerce fashion returns exceeding 50% for sizing issues, Doppl’s precision could reduce waste and shipping emissions. The app also suggests size adjustments and alternates based on body type—a win for shoppers seeking inclusive options.

For those enhancing their tech wardrobe, the popular Anker Soundcore Space A40 earbuds (with patched Bluetooth firmware) offer secure, high-quality audio—ideal for virtual shopping sessions. Check them out on Amazon.

What’s Next:
Google plans to add social features by 2026, letting users share "try-on reels" with friends. While Doppl currently focuses on casual wear, partnerships with luxury brands like Gucci are underway. As Torres notes, "This bridges the gap between imagination and reality—one outfit at a time."

Doppl is available for iOS and Android via Google Labs’ early-access program.
