For five years, the dedicated survivors of Fallout 76 have carved out a life in the rugged hills of West Virginia. But now, Bethesda is throwing the vault door wide open, inviting players on an expedition to a whole new wasteland. In the largest update since the game's controversial 2018 launch, Fallout 76 is officially heading to the burnt-out ruins of Ohio in the massive new "Burning Springs" expansion.
This isn't just a simple addition of a new dungeon or enemy type. Burning Springs represents a significant new chapter for the online RPG, introducing a fresh region to map, new factions to befriend or betray, and a terrifying new local menace. And in a thrilling nod to the recent small-screen success, it also brings a fan-favorite character from the Amazon series directly into the game.
Why Ohio? Bethesda's Creative Director Explains the Surprising Choice
When players think of iconic Fallout locations, Washington D.C.'s Capital Wasteland or the Commonwealth of Boston might spring to mind. So, the choice of Ohio might seem unexpected at first. However, according to Creative Director Jonathan Rush, the decision was a natural evolution of the game's map.
"So when we decided to do another regional expansion which kind of satisfies all those criteria, we were looking at the map, and we looked towards the east, and we start to skirt towards, like, the Capital Wasteland stuff," Rush explained. "And so we were looking towards the west and realized, 'Oh, we're right up against Ohio,' and not much has been done in that region in Fallout lore… So why not?”
This uncharted territory gives the developers a clean slate to create a unique post-nuclear ecosystem, complete with its own dangers and stories.
New Threats, Allies, and a Glimpse at the Burning Springs Wasteland
The Ohio wasteland, dubbed "The Scorch-lands," is far more than just a reskinned Appalachia. Players will encounter the Rust King, a formidable new mutant who promises to be a central figure in the expansion's narrative. Unlike many of the hostile creatures you've encountered, the Rust King may be someone you can actually collaborate with, suggesting deeper, more complex questlines.
But not every new face is friendly. The expansion introduces the Radhog, a twisted, irradiated horror that is set to become a new local menace, likely causing countless unsuspecting players to rethink their exploration strategies.

The Ghoul Rides Into Town, Played by Walton Goggins
Perhaps the most exciting revelation for fans of the franchise is the arrival of The Ghoul. The iconic character from the hit Amazon Fallout series, brought to life by Walton Goggins, will be making his way to Fallout 76.
Before you get too excited about having him as a companion, note that this isn't a playable character. Instead, players will find the enigmatic gunslinger holding court at The Last Resort, a seedy establishment in the settlement known as Highway Town. He'll act as a mission-giver, offering new, likely dangerous, quests for Vault Dwellers to undertake in exchange for unique rewards. His inclusion masterfully bridges the gap between the television show and the game, creating a more cohesive universe.
