| The Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Max is a 5G modem with PoE support |
In a move set to empower businesses and power users, Ubiquiti has officially launched the UniFi 5G Max, a robust new 5G modem designed for seamless integration into any UniFi ecosystem. This device promises to bridge the gap where traditional wired internet falls short, offering carrier-grade cellular performance with the simplicity and management UniFi is known for.
Plug, Power, and Play with PoE Simplicity
One of the standout features of the UniFi 5G Max is its Power over Ethernet (PoE) support. This eliminates the hunt for a nearby power outlet, allowing the modem to be powered directly from a compatible UniFi PoE switch. Installation becomes remarkably clean and flexible, ideal for mounting in telecom cabinets or on walls. The device is equipped with an RJ45 network port capable of 2.5GbE, ensuring the high-speed 5G connection isn’t bottlenecked by the local network link.
Unmatched Cellular Flexibility: Dual SIM, eSIM, and Robust Fallback
Connectivity is where the 5G Max truly shines. It boasts two physical nano SIM slots and adds future-proof support for eSIM profiles. This hybrid approach offers unprecedented flexibility. Users can combine a physical SIM with an eSIM or use two physical cards. The modem operates in Dual SIM Single Standby (DSSS) mode, allowing one SIM to act as a live backup—if the primary cellular network fails, it automatically switches over, ensuring critical connectivity remains online.
A quick note for users: activating an eSIM requires a manual code, as QR code setup isn't supported. Ubiquiti also addresses a potential hiccup for T-Mobile users in the US, stating any reported incompatibility is a database error on the carrier's side. Customers are advised to inform T-Mobile support accordingly. The inclusion of eSIM in a router is still pioneering, and as Ubiquiti notes, some carriers may have a learning curve with the setup.
Blazing Speeds and Clear Status at a Glance
Performance metrics are impressive. On non-standalone (NSA) 5G networks, the modem can deliver download speeds up to 3.4 Gbps and uploads around 560 Mbps. In standalone (SA) mode, downloads are approximately halved, but uploads get a boost to 650 Mbps. A compact status display on the device provides at-a-glance information on the network connection. For broader compatibility, the 5G Max fully supports fallback to 4G/LTE and even 3G/UMTS networks. It's important to note that the modem requires a UniFi Cloud Gateway (like a Dream Machine or Dream Router) to function within the ecosystem.
Built for the Great Outdoors: The Rugged Variant
For truly demanding environments, Ubiquiti is also introducing the UniFi 5G Max Outdoor. This ruggedized variant features an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, making it perfect for installation on rooftops, cellular towers, or even on vehicles. Ubiquiti suggests it's ideal for providing better reception in remote locations or for mobile deployments.
Pricing and Availability
The standard UniFi 5G Max carries an MSRP of $399. For those interested in the outdoor model, it is scheduled for release in January 2026 and will cost $459. Both models are now listed for purchase directly from the manufacturer.
You can explore the specifications and purchase the UniFi 5G Max through the official Ubiquiti store.
With its blend of high-speed connectivity, deployment flexibility, and seamless UniFi integration, the UniFi 5G Max positions itself as a compelling solution for backup internet, primary connectivity in underserved areas, or as a critical component in mobile network setups.
