Marathon’s First Endgame Zone is Live: Bungie Opens the Cryo Archive with Weekend-Only PvPvE Raids

Bungie says Cryo Archive is Marathon’s first endgame zone, opening on March 20 as a weekend-only PvPvE activity with Vaults, Security Clearance, and exclusive contracts.

After weeks of speculation and a steady stream of in-game teasers, Bungie has finally pulled the lever on the first true endgame experience for its extraction shooter, Marathon. The studio has officially opened the doors to the Cryo Archive, a high-stakes zone aboard the derelict UESC Marathon ship that promises to test the limits of even the most seasoned Runners.

According to the official launch details, the Cryo Archive isn’t just another map to loot—it’s a weekend-only, raid-style PvPvE gauntlet designed to reward coordination, persistence, and mastery. As of Friday, March 20, players who meet the stringent requirements can now queue up to face what Bungie describes as a "pinnacle challenge."

What is the Cryo Archive?

In its official overview on Bungie.net, the studio described the zone as a high-intensity activity built around a new Security Clearance progression system. Unlike standard runs on the surface of Tau Ceti IV, the Cryo Archive is a labyrinth of interconnected systems.

The zone spans six interconnected wings linked by a central hub. To succeed, players will need to navigate locked systems, fight off hostile security protocols, and—most critically—contest exfiltration points against enemy crews. The prize for surviving this chaos? Access to seven Vaults containing what Bungie calls "some of the most valuable loot in the game."

"The Cryo Archive is designed to be a pinnacle challenge that will take multiple runs to learn and master," Bungie stated. This isn’t a mode where a blind playthrough will cut it; the layout encourages repetition and route optimization.

How to Access the Endgame Zone

For those eager to dive into the derelict ship, the entry requirements are steep, ensuring that only players who have invested significant time in the core loop can attempt it. To queue for the Cryo Archive, Runners must meet three specific criteria:

  1. Runner Level 25: Reaching the maximum current level.
  2. Six Factions Unlocked: Players must have completed the liaison contracts for all six factions.
  3. Minimum Loadout Value: A gear threshold of 5,000 credits is required to prove your gear is up to the task.

Bungie noted that eligible players will receive a one-time Sponsored Kit tuned specifically for early attempts, giving newcomers a fighting chance against the zone’s harsh difficulty curve.

The activity is built exclusively for three-player crews. Players can enter with their pre-made squad, utilize the solo queue with auto-fill enabled, or seek teammates through Bungie’s official Marathon community channels.

Vaults, Contracts, and Weekly Progression

Unlike the standard extraction loop, progression in the Cryo Archive is designed to feel like a persistent heist. The zone utilizes the new Security Clearance system, which dynamically controls access to doors, supply rooms, and most importantly, the exfiltration points during a run.

The primary objectives revolve around the seven Vaults. To crack them open, squads must first locate Vault Keys. Bungie confirmed that these keys are not found inside the Archive itself; instead, players must find them in planet-side zones, from higher-risk activities, or by eliminating and looting enemy crews before entering the derelict ship.

Additionally, Bungie is layering in a weekly grind to keep the mode fresh. While the Cryo Archive is active (weekends only), a pool of seven unique contracts will appear in the CyberAcme terminal. Completing these contracts can award high-rarity items, and the Codex progression tied to the Archive carries over week to week, ensuring that progress isn’t lost when the mode rotates out.

Stability Fixes and Experimental Playlists

Beyond the massive content drop of the Cryo Archive, Bungie is also rolling out a series of quality-of-life fixes and tests aimed at stabilizing the overall experience. In a recent server-side update, the studio addressed a lingering exploit that allowed larger-than-expected equipment stacks.

"Unsupported extra items will be lost on infil," Bungie warned, clarifying that the fix will also result in a reduction of the dreaded anteater errors that have occasionally plagued runs. For players who have been frustrated by inventory glitches or disconnects, this stability patch is a welcome companion to the new content.

Our screenshots also indicate that Bungie is testing a new Experimental Duo Queue specifically for the Perimeter map. For two weeks starting March 18, pre-made duos can queue into Perimeter with crew fill disabled. Bungie notes that this is a trial run and "bugs [are] still possible" during the test period, signaling that the studio is actively experimenting with matchmaking formulas based on community feedback.

What’s Next for Marathon?

The opening of the Cryo Archive represents a significant milestone for Marathon. It validates the "extraction shooter" loop with a dedicated endgame structure that blends PvP tension with PvE coordination.

Bungie has really stepped up, which shows that player feedback has been evolving Marathon. In-game notices spotted alongside the Cryo rollout also tease that Ranked Mode is on the horizon, alongside additional activities planned for the Cryo Archive ecosystem.

For now, the weekend warriors have a new challenge to sink their teeth into. Whether you are hunting for Vault Keys in the wilderness or coordinating a three-man breach into the derelict ship, the race for the game’s best loot has officially begun.
