The Danish studio behind the beloved Hitman series is navigating turbulent waters as a major funding source dries up, even as their latest Bond game breaks sales records.

IO Interactive, the critically acclaimed studio behind the legendary Hitman franchise, is facing an unexpected and difficult period. Despite the phenomenal success of their newest blockbuster, 007: First Light, which sold an incredible 1.5 million units in its first day and an impressive 3 million copies within two weeks, the studio has been forced to announce layoffs following a significant fallout with Microsoft's Xbox division.

007: First Light has not only been a commercial triumph but also a critical darling, earning a Metascore of 84/100 and a staggering 90% positive review rating on Steam. However, the good news ends there. The studio confirmed that a crucial partnership with an external publisher on their ambitious new IP, "Project Fantasy," has come to a sudden and abrupt end.

The End of a Partnership: What Happened to Project Fantasy?

According to a report from Bloomberg's renowned gaming journalist Jason Schreier, the external partner that pulled the plug was Xbox. Microsoft had been funding and planning to publish Project Fantasy, which was described as an online RPG. However, the Xbox division decided to end the partnership, leading IO Interactive to make the difficult decision to cut staff.

In a heartfelt and transparent statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), IO Interactive addressed the gaming community directly:

"Dear gaming community, For a good while, it has been all positive news from IO Interactive. We remain humbled and honored by the response to our latest outing with a young, unproven Bond. A bold new story and a take on one of the most famous characters in entertainment, which the world has embraced with love.

However, today we have to share some more downbeat news. A relationship with an external partner on our own IP, Project Fantasy, has come to an end. This means we have to adapt to this new reality and its short-term consequences, including staffing decisions, which is what is happening as we write this update, and we are fully committed to supporting those affected through this challenging transition.

Project Fantasy is a game, a world, and an IP that we absolutely love and remain 100% committed to, now and in the future. This wonderful universe will see the light of day."

Xbox's Shifting Priorities

A spokesperson for Xbox confirmed the split to Bloomberg, stating that the gaming division is "taking a fresh look at where we invest, so we’re focusing on our highest priorities." This decision appears to be part of a larger strategic shift within Microsoft, which is reportedly preparing for major internal structural changes.

This development, while painful for IO Interactive, might just be the tip of the iceberg. Rumors are circulating that Microsoft is preparing Xbox for widespread layoffs expected to begin as early as July, signaling a significant restructuring of their gaming operations. For more details on the financial implications and the official confirmation of the split, you can read the full Bloomberg report here.

What This Means for IO Interactive and Project Fantasy

Despite the immediate setback, IO Interactive has made it clear that Project Fantasy is not canceled. The studio remains "100% committed" to the project and insists that the "wonderful universe will see the light of day." This suggests that IO Interactive is actively seeking a new partner or alternative funding sources to keep the ambitious RPG alive.

For now, the focus is on supporting the employees affected by the layoffs. The studio has pledged its full support to those transitioning out of the company during this challenging time.

The situation presents a stark contrast: a studio riding the high of a massive critical and commercial success with 007: First Light, yet simultaneously forced to downsize due to the volatile nature of the gaming industry's funding and publishing landscape. As IO Interactive navigates this difficult period, the gaming community will be watching closely to see how the studio adapts and whether Project Fantasy can find a new home to bring its vision to life.
