Casio is giving its most popular budget-friendly square watch a major style upgrade. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to pick up the W-221 series, this might be it. According to a new report from Casioblog, the Casio W-221HD-1A is on the horizon, bringing a stainless steel bracelet to the affordable digital watch that took the collector community by storm earlier this year.
The watch is expected to hit shelves in late autumn 2026.
A Retro Look with a Metal Twist
When Casio first unveiled the W-221H back in February, it received a surprisingly warm reception. Collectors praised it for its massive, highly legible display and unbeatable price point. It was a return to the pure, functional aesthetic that made Casio famous, reminiscent of the classic "Casio Standard" models from the 80s and 90s.
Now, Casio is doubling down on that vintage vibe. The new "HD" variant swaps out the standard resin strap for a stainless steel bracelet. The design features narrow horizontal links, a style that echoes the brand's heritage models. It’s a subtle change that completely alters the watch's wrist presence, transforming it from a casual beater into something that looks a bit more dressed up.

It’s Still a Resin Watch at Heart
Before you get too excited thinking this is a full metal square, there’s a catch. The W-221HD-1A keeps the same plastic (resin) case as the standard model. Casio pulled a similar move earlier this year with the W-800HD-1AV, which paired a silver resin case with a steel bracelet.
Purists might find the combination of plastic and steel a bit odd, but it’s a common tactic for Casio to keep costs down while offering the look of a metal watch. The dimensions remain identical to the resin version—43.7 × 38.4 × 12.2 mm—though the watch will feel slightly heavier on the wrist due to the metal links.
Features & Functionality
The W-221 series is beloved because it strips away the unnecessary and focuses on what matters: telling time clearly. The display is huge, and the font is bold, making it one of the easiest digital watches to read at a glance.

The biggest question is, of course, the price. Casioblog estimates the W-221HD-1A will retail for roughly **$80**. That is a significant jump from the standard W-221H-1AV, which currently sells for just $45.95 on Casio’s US store.
Essentially, you are paying a premium of nearly double for the steel bracelet. While $80 is still affordable in the world of watch collecting, it puts the W-221HD in direct competition with entry-level metal Casios.
Casio hasn't officially listed the watch on its websites yet, so we are still waiting for the final word on the US price and release date. But if you love the retro square aesthetic and want a bit more metal on your wrist, this is definitely one to watch.
