The Honor Robot Phone is one of the most unusual smartphones to come out of China in years. It is the first handset with an integrated 3-axis gimbal, a mechanical camera arm designed to stabilize video in ways that software alone cannot match. For now, buyers outside China will likely have to import it, and Honor has not confirmed whether it will ever officially launch the Robot Phone in Europe or other international markets.
But the phone has already reached the US in the hands of YouTuber Zack Nelson, who runs JerryRigEverything. He recently subjected it to an extensive durability test before taking it apart. The results show both the promise and the practical limits of putting a moving gimbal inside a phone.
A New Kind of Durability Challenge
Because the Robot Phone has a micro gimbal built into its body, it faces tests that ordinary smartphones never do. Nelson found that the camera arm is surprisingly forgiving when the motors are blocked while moving. It does not immediately strip gears or snap. However, it gets very hot in the process.
Temperatures around 50°C / 125°F for the robotic arm are apparently not uncommon. In day-to-day use, that should not cause problems, but it is a reminder that the gimbal is a mechanical system with real thermal limits.
Dirt Is the Real Enemy
The bigger issue appears to be environmental protection. Most modern bar-style smartphones are rated IP68 or better, meaning they are dustproof and water-resistant. The Honor Robot Phone, by contrast, is only IP54. That is enough for light splashes and limited dust exposure, but it is not built for the beach.
In Nelson’s testing, the moving arm was effectively disabled after exposure to dirt. Even compressed air did not help. The Robot Phone is not waterproof either, so users should be cautious around sand, mud, dust, and water. For a phone whose main selling point is a motorized camera, that is a significant trade-off.

Stability Holds Up
At least the core chassis seems solid. The bend test revealed no underlying stability issues. That is reassuring, because a gimbal phone has more internal complexity than a standard flagship. If the frame had flexed easily, the mechanical camera could have been at risk. Instead, the Robot Phone appears to be structurally sound, even if it is not rugged in the traditional sense.
Inside the Honor Robot Phone
From 7:45 onwards, the JerryRigEverything video offers a look inside the unusual camera flagship. The back turns out to be a plastic cover, while the battery is comparatively easy to access, although it is glued in place. Due to the mechanical components, Honor uses several unusual design features inside the Robot Phone, including braided wires. Anyone who has wanted to see what the inside of a micro gimbal looks like will find the teardown especially interesting.
What This Means for Buyers
The Honor Robot Phone is not a mainstream flagship for everyone. It is a niche device for people who prioritize stabilized video and are willing to accept compromises. Its gimbal can overheat under stress, its IP54 rating limits where you can safely use it, and dirt can stop the camera arm entirely. Yet it also survives bending, and its internals show genuine engineering ambition.
For now, the Robot Phone remains a China-first product with limited international availability. If Honor ever decides to sell it more widely, the company may need to improve dust and water resistance before the gimbal can be trusted in real-world adventures. Until then, anyone who imports one should treat it less like a rugged action phone and more like a delicate piece of camera hardware.
