PS5 Can Now Play Original PS2 Discs Thanks to Homebrew Developer – But There's a Major Catch

The PS5SX2 emulator allows original PS2 DVDs to be read using the disc drive of a modified PlayStation 5.

In a development that has sent shockwaves through the retro gaming community, a homebrew developer has achieved what Sony never offered – the ability to play original PlayStation 2 discs directly on the PlayStation 5.

The breakthrough comes from developer Sword, who announced on X (formerly Twitter) on October 8 that his PS5SX2 emulator can now read and run original PS2 DVDs through the PS5's disc drive. A follow-up video posted a day later demonstrated the technology in action, showing classic PS2 titles booting up on Sony's latest console.

"This is insanity!" one user commented under the announcement. Another simply wrote: "This is massive."

How It Works

PS5SX2 is built on the foundation of PCSX2, the well-known PC emulator that has been letting gamers relive PS2 classics on computers for years. The magic happens when you insert an original PS2 disc into the PS5 – the emulator reads the DVD and saves it as a digital copy. Once that initial step is complete, the game can be launched directly from the console's storage.

The emulator doesn't just run games at their original quality either. According to reports, PS5SX2 supports graphical enhancements including up to six times the original internal resolution, 4K output, widescreen patches, and FPS improvements for compatible titles. Recent updates have even introduced CRT television filters for those who want that authentic early-2000s experience.

The latest version, 2.03, has been available for free on GitHub since October 11.

The Catch: Jailbreak Required

Before you rush to dig out your old PS2 collection, there's a significant hurdle. PS5SX2 requires a jailbroken PS5 to function. The emulator cannot be installed on an unmodified console, as jailbreaking is necessary to bypass Sony's software restrictions that normally prevent users from installing unauthorized programs.

This comes with real risks. Beyond potential software instability, users who jailbreak their consoles could face PlayStation Network bans and void their warranty coverage entirely. It's a trade-off that dedicated retro gaming enthusiasts may be willing to make, but casual players should think carefully before proceeding.

Additional Limitations

The PS5's disc drive presents another obstacle. While it can read DVDs, it cannot read CDs – meaning PS2 games that were originally released on CD format are unfortunately left out of this compatibility breakthrough.

External USB disc drives are now supported as an experimental feature, though this functionality remains in development.

Sony Under Fire

The homebrew achievement has sparked renewed criticism of Sony's approach to backward compatibility. The PS5's official backward compatibility only extends to PS4 titles, leaving PS3, PS2, and original PlayStation games officially unsupported.

Some community members accuse Sony of deliberately neglecting backward compatibility to profit from digital re-releases and subscription services like PlayStation Plus. The contrast between what a single developer achieved and what a multi-billion dollar corporation offers has not gone unnoticed.

What About PS3?

In an exciting tease for the future, when one user asked whether a jailbroken PS5 could eventually play PS3 discs as well, developer Sword responded simply: "It will."

Early experimental ports of the PS3 emulator RPCS3 already exist for the platform, though they currently cannot read discs. Whether that limitation will be overcome remains to be seen, but the possibility has retro gaming fans understandably excited.

The Bottom Line

For those with a jailbroken PS5 and a collection of PS2 DVDs gathering dust, PS5SX2 represents an incredible opportunity to revisit gaming's golden era with modern enhancements. For everyone else, it's a reminder of what could be possible if official backward compatibility weren't such a low priority for console manufacturers.
