| The Sony ECM-AX10 comes with four microphones enabling spatial audio recordings on smartphones. |
Sony has just announced the ECM-AX10, a compact spatial audio microphone designed specifically for smartphone creators who want to capture immersive, three-dimensional sound. According to Notebookcheck, this tiny dongle packs four microphones into a spherical module, enabling ambisonic (360-degree), binaural, and stereo recording—all from a device that plugs directly into your phone’s USB-C port.
A New Era of Mobile Audio Recording
For years, smartphone videographers have been stuck with mono or basic stereo audio. That’s fine for casual clips, but it fails to capture the true atmosphere of a live concert, a bustling street market, or a thrilling sports event. Sony’s ECM-AX10 aims to change that.
The key innovation here is the newly developed spherical microphone module. By arranging four omnidirectional microphone units in a sphere, the ECM-AX10 can capture sound from every direction. This enables ambisonic recording, which preserves the spatial information of your environment. When you play back the footage with compatible headphones or VR goggles, you can literally turn your head and hear the sound shift accordingly—just as if you were there.
Three Recording Modes for Every Scenario
Sony knows that not every project requires full 360-degree audio. That’s why the ECM-AX10 offers three distinct recording formats:
- Ambisonic Recording: The flagship mode, capturing immersive 360-degree sound. This format is compatible with Eclipsa Audio, an open-source spatial audio standard backed by Google and Samsung.
- Binaural Recording: Optimized for headphone playback, this mode uses two channels to recreate a natural, three-dimensional soundstage. Sony’s proprietary 360 Reality Audio technology is used to enhance the spatial effect, even on devices that don’t support Eclipsa Audio.
- Stereo Recording: The most universal option, working with both headphones and speakers. This is perfect for general-purpose video work.
The Spatial Audio Video Tool App
Hardware is only half the story. Sony has also developed a companion app called Spatial Audio Video Tool, which is available for both iOS and Android. This app lets you shoot video with spatial audio, review your footage, perform basic edits, and export your files in various formats—including Eclipsa Audio, binaural, stereo, and even ambisonic audio-only files.
According to Sony’s official press release, the ECM-AX10 is the world’s first microphone to receive Eclipsa Audio certification. This means you can upload your spatial audio videos directly to YouTube and have them play back with full 360-degree immersion for viewers who have compatible devices.
Compact, Lightweight, and Ready to Go
Weighing just 24 grams and measuring approximately 116 mm, the ECM-AX10 is designed to be unobtrusive. It draws power directly from your smartphone via USB-C, consuming only 100 mA at 5 V. There’s no need for external batteries or additional equipment—just plug it in and start recording.
The microphone itself supports high-resolution audio capture at up to 48 kHz and 32-bit float, with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz and a maximum SPL of over 120 dB. This makes it suitable for everything from quiet nature recordings to loud concert environments.
Tuned by Professional Sound Engineers
To ensure the highest possible audio quality, Sony enlisted the help of sound engineers from Sony PCL, a company known for its work in post-production for film and video. These experts lent their expertise to fine-tune the ECM-AX10’s sound signature, ensuring that both music and environmental audio are captured with clarity and depth.
One engineer, Michihiko Iwana, commented that the microphone captures orchestral music with rich low and mid-range response, while also reproducing environmental sounds with a stunning sense of three-dimensional space. “It’s a microphone that elevates your precious videos into something more real and memorable,” he said.
Pricing and Availability
The ECM-AX10 will be available in Japan starting October 23, 2026. Sony has not yet announced an official price, but the product page lists it as an open-price item, with estimates suggesting a retail price of around 30,000 yen (approximately $200 USD). Pre-display units will be available at Sony Stores in Ginza, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka Tenjin starting October 9.
For creators outside Japan who want similar functionality without relying on a smartphone, the larger Zoom H3-VR 360-degree sound recorder is a solid alternative. You can check it out on Amazon.
Final Thoughts
Sony’s ECM-AX10 represents a significant step forward for mobile content creators. By combining professional-grade spatial audio recording with the convenience of a smartphone accessory, Sony is making immersive audio more accessible than ever. Whether you’re a vlogger, a travel filmmaker, or just someone who wants to capture life’s moments in richer detail, this tiny microphone could be a game-changer.
