Collectors, beware: those tempting disc-based GTA 6 listings aren't what they seem
As the gaming world counts down to the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, fans desperate for a traditional physical copy have been greeted with a tantalizing—yet ultimately disappointing—development. A Chinese-language retailer has listed what appears to be a physical Ultimate Edition of GTA 6 for PS5, complete with a disc. However, there's a major caveat that every potential buyer needs to know.
The Unplayable Truth
According to images circulating on social media, including a post from GTA 6 Info on X, these listings are selling "collectible replicas" rather than functional games. The discs, while bearing official-looking labels for both Standard and Ultimate Edition versions, are purely cosmetic Blu-rays that cannot be played.
The "Commemorative Set Model," as it's being marketed, includes an Ultimate Edition box—despite GTA 6 being a digital-only release—along with front and back case artwork and what appears to be a content card with an unredeemable code. These are essentially elaborate display pieces designed to fill the void left by Rockstar Games' decision to skip physical distribution.
Chinese manufacturers are already producing unofficial physical GTA 6 PS5 editions before launch. The listings include Standard and “Ultimate Edition” box sets with discs, but they’re being sold purely as collectible replicas and are not playable. https://t.co/DexzVjM9Z8

Who's Behind the Design?
The product images claim that Lionheart, a branding and advertising agency with offices in Shanghai and London, designed the artwork for these unplayable physical editions. Lionheart describes itself as an independent global agency that helps "international and Chinese brands grow their profile and sales," but whether they have any actual agreement with Take-Two Interactive or Rockstar Games remains highly questionable.
Given that Grand Theft Auto 5 was never officially distributed in mainland China, these unofficial collectibles likely target Hong Kong markets where the game is available for pre-order, or Chinese-speaking gamers in Taiwan and Singapore.
Why Fans Are Desperate for Discs
The demand for physical media remains strong despite the industry's digital shift. While Blu-rays aren't a dominant format in China, an authentic GTA 6 PS5 disc would generate significant interest worldwide. Unfortunately, as the release date approaches, there's still no official sign of a physical alternative in any region.
For now, collectors must settle for officially licensed merchandise like the Vice City Box, which includes a Macca The Gator figure, Oakley sunglasses, and various branded items—though even that $400 package doesn't include a digital redemption code for the actual game.
What This Means for Gamers
This situation highlights the growing frustration among physical media enthusiasts. With major releases increasingly going digital-only, unofficial sellers are stepping in to fill the gap—but without providing any real value beyond aesthetics.
For those hoping to add GTA 6 to their physical collection, the wait continues. Until Rockstar announces an official disc release, these commemorative sets remain nothing more than expensive decorations with a misleading premise.
