AnyAspectRatio Plugin Kills the Black Bars on Steam Deck and Other Handhelds

The Decky plugin AnyAspectRatio bundles fullscreen fixes for more than 100 games and aims to eliminate black bars on the Steam Deck with minimal effort.

A new Decky plugin bundles fullscreen fixes for more than 100 games into a single tap, and it's free on GitHub.

If you've spent any time gaming on a Steam Deck, you know the ritual: you launch a game that was clearly built for a 16:9 TV, and you're greeted by chunky black bars on the left and right of Valve's 16:10 panel. Sometimes there's a setting buried in the options menu. Sometimes there isn't. And sometimes you end up trawling forums for a mod, downloading a file, and hoping you remembered which folder it goes in.

A new community plugin called AnyAspectRatio wants to make all of that go away. Announced on Reddit by developer u/TLinCAR, the plugin is built for Decky Loader, the popular homebrew store for the Steam Deck, and it collects fullscreen and aspect ratio fixes for a growing library of games in one place. Rather than installing mod files title by title, you tap once and let the plugin handle the rest.

What it actually does

Out of the box, AnyAspectRatio targets the Steam Deck's native 16:10 resolution of 1,280 × 800, which is where the black bar problem is most obvious. The compatibility list has already passed the 100-game mark and includes some heavy hitters — Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Resident Evil Village and Dark Souls III among them.

The plugin isn't limited to 16:10, though. It also supports other aspect ratios such as 4:3 and 3:2, which means it could be genuinely useful on other handhelds that run Decky, not just the Deck itself. That's a smart bit of forward thinking on the developer's part, since the handheld PC market is getting crowded.

A Monster Hunter-sized headache, solved?

There's a nice bit of history here. Around three years ago, Steam Deck owners were trying to get Monster Hunter Rise running fullscreen using REFramework and some manual aspect ratio tweaking — a process that worked, sort of, but could introduce visual glitches.

Fittingly, Monster Hunter Rise and Resident Evil Village both show up in the screenshots the developer shared when introducing the plugin. In theory, a game that once required a small weekend project now runs without black bars after a few taps.

In the past, getting rid of black bars in Monster Hunter Rise wasn't always straightforward. (Pictured: A screenshot from Reddit.)

Worth tempering your expectations

Here's the honest caveat: user feedback is still thin on the ground, so it's hard to say how reliably the plugin performs across the whole compatibility list. Results will likely vary from game to game, and some titles may still need manual coaxing.

The developer is also upfront about the project's status, describing it as a side project with updates arriving whenever time allows. That's the nature of community tooling, and it's worth keeping in mind before you install anything.

Where to get it

AnyAspectRatio is completely free. You can grab the latest build from the project's GitHub releases page:

You'll need Decky Loader installed first, since the plugin is distributed through that ecosystem. If you're already running Decky for other tweaks, adding this one is about as painless as it gets.

For anyone who's been annoyed by those black bars since the day the Steam Deck arrived, this is one of the more practical community projects to come along in a while. It won't fix every game, and it won't be for everyone, but it's a genuine quality-of-life improvement for a very common complaint.
